Samarth class offshore patrol vessel are a series of six vessels being built by Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Coast Guard. They are an improvement over the earlier Samar-class OPV's.[1]

History

Following the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the Indian Government initiated a program to triple the Coast Guard force, assets and infrastructure.[2] Thereafter in accordance with it a 'request for information' for acquisition of six OPVs was issued by the Ministry of Defence on 1 April 2010.[3] After technical evaluation and commercial bids a contract worth $400 million or Rs. 1800 crore was signed with GSL on 9 May 2012 to build six vessels.[2]

On 14 May 2012 GSL did the first steel cutting in its shipyard,[4] and the keel-laying ceremony of the first of the new class of offshore patrol vessels was held at Vasco on 28 September 2012.[5][6] The second and third vessels were laid down 28 January and 11 October 2013, and the fourth on 9 January 2014.[7] The first vessel is scheduled to be delivered in August 2014, with all six to be in commission by 2017.[8]

Specification

The class will be 105 metres long and have a displacement of about 2,400 tonnes. They will be fitted with a contemporary Navigational Integrated Bridge System with Bridge Watch Navigational Call Up System, CCTV System for complete surveillance. They will also carry quick response boats for search and rescue, and four lane simulator for small arms training.[4] This class is the biggest class to serve in the coast guard fleet.[9]
