GFriend (Hangul: 여자친구; RR: Yeoja Chingu; stylized as GFRIEND) is a six-member South Korean girl group formed by Source Music in 2015.[1] They made their debut with the EP Season of Glass on January 16, 2015. GFriend gained good scores on various music charts and music programs. They are also winners of a few 2015 Female Rookie Awards and have garnered much attention since their debut, despite coming from a small company.[2]
History
2015: Debut, Season of Glass, Flower Bud and stage accident
On January 15, 2015, GFriend released their debut EP Season of Glass.[3] The album consists of five tracks; its promotional track, "Glass Bead" (Hangul: 유리구슬; RR: Yuriguseul), was composed by Seo Yong-bae and Lee Gi.[4] It debuted at number twelve on Gaon's weekly chart.[5] The group started promotions for their album on January 16 on KBS's music program Music Bank.[6] According to YouTube, the music video for their title song "Glass Bead" placed 9th in top 10 of "Most Viewed K-Pop Videos Around the World - January 2015".[7] On January 28, 2015, Billboard named GFriend as one of "Top 5 K-Pop Artists to Watch in 2015".[8]
On July 23, 2015, GFriend released their second EP Flower Bud.[9] The album consists of six tracks; the title track is "Me Gustas Tu" (Hangul: 오늘부터 우리는; RR: Oneulbuteo Urineun). The music video for "Me Gustas Tu" was released on GFriend's official YouTube channel on July 23, 2015. GFriend started their group promotions on the same date as the album release, July 23, 2015 on Mnet's M! Countdown.[10] They were praised for coming from a small company yet giving very good results.[11]
On September 7, 2015, a fancam of a GFriend's performance went viral due to the group continuing to perform even after two of the members tripped or fell due to a slippery stage. GFriend were praised for their professionalism, especially Yuju, who fell a total of eight times throughout the performance and SinB fell once hard. Due to the viral video, "Me Gustas Tu" came back to chart, ranking eighth on Instiz's iChart.[12][13][14][15]
On September 17, 2015, GFriend made headlines for being the only girl group to be nominated for 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards‘ “Best Korean Act” category along with other boy groups B1A4, BTS, GOT7, and VIXX.[16][17][18][19]
2016–present: Snowflake, fandom name and first music show win
On January 25, 2016, GFriend released their third EP titled Snowflake with the title track "Rough" (Hangul: 시간을 달려서; RR: Siganeul Dallyeoseo; lit. "Running Through Time"). "Rough" is the last song to complete GFriend's high school concept trilogy (previous two title tracks are parts of the trilogy). On the same day, in their comeback showcase, the fandom name of GFriend was revealed to be "Buddy" (Hangul: 버디). GFriend started the promotions for Snowflake on January 26 on SBS MTV's music program The Show. On February 2, GFriend received their first ever music show win on SBS MTV's The Show.[20][21] The next day, they won on Show Champion,[22] on February 4, they won on M Countdown,[23] and on February 5, GFriend won on Music Bank.[24] They won on Inkigayo on February 7,[25] and on the same day, the title track "Rough" achieved a "perfect all-kill" on Instiz's iChart 14 days after being released by topping both the real-time and daily charts of eight major Korean digital charts including Melon, Mnet, Bugs, Olleh, Soribada, Genie, Naver and Monkey3. In addition, "Rough" stayed in a "perfect all-kill" for 121 hours.[26] Snowflake album also debuted at number ten on Billboard's World Albums Chart.[27]
