Güngören (Syriac: Keferb) is a village in the Midyat district of Mardin Province, Turkey.

History

Güngören is a Syriac Christian village, like many of the villages of eastern Mardin Province. The village of Güngören predates the coming of Islam, with a church, known as the "Purple Stefanos Church", dating back to AD 778.[2] The village is also adjacent to an ancient monastery, Mor Gabriel Monastery, only 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the west.

Geography

The village of Güngören is surrounded by forest, and is situated on top of a hill. The village is located in a geographic and cultural region known as Tur Abdin, which is a large and fairly hilly plateau.

The nearest city is Midyat, 24.4 kilometres (15.2 mi) distant. The village is 93.2 kilometres (57.9 mi) miles east of the provincial capital of Mardin.

The economy of the village is mostly based on agriculture and livestock.

Infrastructure

There is a primary school in the village. The village only has a drinking water network; there is no sewage network. PTT exists, but there is no branch of the post office. It has a health center that is not used very often. There are asphalt roads, as well as electricity and telephone services.
