Friedheim is an unincorporated community in Apple Creek Township in northwestern Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States.

Name

The town was originally known as Dissen and was named by the German settlers after their home town Dissen in Westphalia near Bielefeld, Germany. However, the name of the town eventually evolved into Friedheim, which is German for Peace Home or Home of Peace. The town may have been renamed by further German settlers after their old home town of Friedheim, Germany, a small town in the Posen region of West Prussia. After World War II, West Prussia was annexed to Poland and its German population forcibly expelled. Polish authorities renamed the town Miasteczko Krajeńskie in 1945.[1]

History

A small village in the northwest part of Apple Creek Township; German settlers arrived in the Friedheim area in the 1840s fleeing political unrest back home. These German Lutheran settlers built their own log church in 1949, which was later replaced by the current stone church in 1857.[2] A post office was established here in 1887 and named by the German settlers for their old home Friedheim, Germany.[3] Friedheim is home to Trinity Lutheran church, a member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.[4]
