Bernaldo de Quirós

Bernaldo (or Bernard) de Quirós (Oviedo/Uviéu, 1675 - 1710) is the name by which is known literarily Francisco Bernardo de Quirós y Benavides, the only writer in the Asturian language of the 17th century with the Antón de Marirreguera, that is preserved some work.

It's important not to confuse him with the playwright in Castilian Francisco Bernardo de Quirós (1580 - 1668), or with the military of the same name (1650-1708).

The life of Bernaldo de Quirós is quite dark, but belonged to one of the most renowned families of Asturias 17th century. Probably the Bernaldo de Quiros to which we refer is the same as Lena was born in around 1675, participated in the War of the Spanish Succession on the side of Felipe V and died while still young in the Battle of Zaragoza.

It seems it was a renowned poet in his day and wrote a number of works. Thus, González de Posada that came as a student to copy an entire volume to his own works, "all romances". However, only reached our times the poem El caballu.

El caballu is a romance of 330 verses which takes the form of letters. The author praises the qualities of a horse that the narrator wants to sell more of Oviedo/Uviéu ensign to install inside the actual functions and carry the banner of the city. In the poem highlights the parodic tone and irony, which along with other resources such as images hyperbole or forced, make it a typical example of the Baroque style, as Professor Ramos Corrada says.
