Fractionism
Fractionism[1] (Fraccionismo in Angolan Portuguese) was a political movement in Angola during the 1970s.
Description
Fractionism culminated in the attempted coup d'etat on 27 May 1977 against Agostinho Neto, led by a leading figure of the MPLA (Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola), Nito Alves. The movement had the support of the OCA (Organização dos Comunistas de Angola), but was suppressed with the help of Cuban military. An estimated 18,000 followers (or alleged followers) of Nito Alves were killed in the aftermath of the attempted coup, over a period that lasted up to two years.
