Federalism in Sri Lanka
Federalism has long been advocated as a means of resolving the ethnic conflict between the Tamil and Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka. It is usually seen as an alternative to the independent Tamil Eelam that is advocated by many Tamil nationalist groups, most particularly the Tamil Tigers. Federalism is, however, opposed by Sinhalese Buddhist nationalist groups who advocate for a continued unitary state with minimal cultural concessions to the Sri Lankan Tamils.
