The Fairfax Christian School is a Christian school covering Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in Vienna, Virginia.

History

It was founded in 1961 by Presbyterian clergyman Robert L. Thoburn.[1] It started out as Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. In each of the next four years, another grade was added.

In 1968, the first class of high school students graduated, and the school population peaked at 650.[2]

In 1981, the school was featured in an article in People Magazine that discussed how its teaching was based on, in the words of Thoburn, "...standards that come out of a biblical world."[3] This accounted for its attractions to children coming from families living in the Washington, D.C. area who were also members of the New Right,

In 1983, the school moved from its original location on Pope's Head Road to its current location on Hunter Mill Road. The school mascot was changed from the Colonials to the Cardinals in 2014.[2]

School information

The school offers Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade.[4] Many conservative politicians have sent their children to the school, and 5 parents of Fairfax Christian School students have run for president. The former CIA Inspector General, David Buckley, is an alumni. In 2016, the school will move from its current location to a larger campus in Dulles, Virginia.

Over a quarter of the middle school students and over half of the high school students are not Americans,[5] and the majority of the foreign students are from China. Many of the international students come for the school's American culture, American capitalism, and ESL classes.
