The faculty has sixteen departments and its current dean is Professor V. P. Sivanathan.[2] As at 31 December 2011 the faculty had 2,469 undergraduate students and 142 academic staff (121 permanent, 21 temporary).[3][4]

History

The Jaffna Campus of the University of Sri Lanka was established with effect from 1 August 1974.[5] The campus started functioning in October 1974 with two faculties: Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Science.[5][6] The Faculty of Humanities was based at Parameshwara College in Thirunelveli whilst the Faculty of Science was based at Jaffna College in Vaddukoddai.[5] K. Indrapala, senior lecturer in history at the Peradeniya Campus of the University of Sri Lanka, was appointed the first Dean of the Faculty of Humanities.[5] The faculty had four departments: Hindu Civilization, History, Sinhala and Tamil.[6]

The faculty was renamed as the Faculty of Arts in 1975.[5] The Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts (RAFA) was taken over by the University of Sri Lanka in 1975 and placed under the Faculty of Arts.[5] RAFA had two departments: Dance and Music.[6] Eight new departments were created: Sanskrit (1975),[7] Education (1980),[6] Language & Cultural Studies (1981),[8] Fine Arts (1982),[9] Economics, Geography, Islamic Civilization and Philosophy .[6]

The Jaffna Campus was elevated to university status on 1 January 1979 with the creation of the University of Jaffna.[5]

Following the Black July riots the Institute of Indigenous Medicine affiliated to the University of Colombo was transferred to the University of Jaffna as a department under the Faculty of Arts in 1984.[5][6] The Department of Language & Cultural Studies was split into the Department of Linguistics & English and Department of Christian & Islamic Civilization in 1989.[8][10] The Department of Siddha Medicine was removed from the faculty in October 1993 and now functions directly under the control of the vice chancellor.[5] The Department of Political Science & Sociology was created in July 1998 from the Department of Economics.[6] The Department of Law was created in May 2005.[6] The Department of Political Science & Sociology was split into the Department of Political Science and Department of Sociology in December 2007.[11]
