"Für Danzig" ("For Danzig") was the official national anthem of the Free City of Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland) from 1920-1939.† The lyrics were written by Paul Enderling, while the music was by Georg Göhler. After the Nazi invasion of Poland and the concurrent annexation of Danzig by Germany in 1939, Das Lied der Deutschen was adopted as the official anthem, along with the Horst-Wessel-Lied.
^† Another song – In Danzig was also a semi-official anthem of the Free City, which had words by Josef von Eichendorff set to the traditional tune.
German lyrics
- Kennst du die Stadt am Bernsteinstrand,
- umgrünt von ew'ger Wälder Band,
- wo schlanke Giebel streben
- empor zum Sonnenschein!
- Ja, sollt' ich fröhlich leben,
- in Danzig müßt es sein!
- Kennst du die Stadt, wo Turm an Turm
- in Treue trotzt dem Zeitensturm,
- wo stolze Schiffe gleiten
- ins blaue Meer hinein!
- Ja, sollt' ich tapfer streiten,
- für Danzig müßt es sein!
- Kennst du die Stadt, wo deutsche Art
- voll Kraft und Mut ihr Gut bewahrt,
- wo deutsch die Glocken werben
- und deutsch ein jeder Stein !
- Ja sollt' ich selig sterben,
- in Danzig müßt es sein !
Polish translation
- Na bursztynowym brzegu gród,
- wokół którego lasów wbród,
- a smukłe domów szczyty
- ku słońcu wciąż się pną...
- Tak, jeśli mam szczęśliwy być,
- to w Gdańsku muszę żyć!
- Wieża przy wieży w Mieście tym
- wciąż trwa na przekór czasom złym,
- a dumne statki suną
- prosto w błękity mórz!
- Tak, tylko za me Miasto
- w bitewny pójdę kurz!
- Czy znasz to miasto, gdzie niemiecki ród
- pełen siły i odwagi, strzeże bogactw swych,
- gdzie niemieckie dzwony wołają
- i niemiecki jest każdy kamień !
- Tak, jeśli mam błogo umrzeć,
- to zrobię to tylko w Gdańsku
English translation
- Do you know the city on the amber beach,
- wreathe by everlasting green forests,
- where slender gables stretch upwards
- towards the sunshine !
- Yes, should I live merrily
- it must be in Danzig!
- Do you know the city, where tower at tower
- loyally resists the storms of time
- where proud ships slide
- towards the blue sea !
- Yes, should I bravely struggle
- it must be for Danzig!
- Do you know the city, where German kind
- defends its wealth with might and main,
- where in German the bells invite
- and where German's every stone !
- Yes, should I blessedly die,
- It must be in Danzig!
