Evan Mervyn Davies, Baron Davies of Abersoch, CBE (born 21 November 1952) is a former banker and was a UK government minister until May 2010. His role as Minister of State for Trade, Investment and Small Business involved oversight of UK Trade and Investment - the United Kingdom's export support and inward investment agency - and he had dual accountability to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Career

Davies was Chairman of Standard Chartered PLC between November 2006 and January 2009, and Chief Executive between 2001 and 2006. He was appointed a Director in 1997.[1]

Since 2010, Lord Davies has held executive roles on the board of Corsair Capital LLC,[2] a global private equity group which focuses its investments in the financial services industry. He also acts in an advisory capacity to the CEO of Moelis & Company.[3]

He is also Chairman of youth fashion chain, Jack Wills, a position he has held since 2014. He replaced Peter Saunders, who stepped down after six years in the role.[4] Davies also holds non-executive roles at Chime Communications plc and Diageo plc.

He completed the Programme for Management Development at Harvard Business School and is a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers.

In November 2013, he was announced as the inaugural chairman of the Garden Bridge Trust, planning a planted bridge over the Thames in London.[5]

In January 2015, he called for the investment in infrastructure in Wales, citing the need for better rail and mobile services.[6]

In May 2015 Davies was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the LetterOne Group, an international investment holding business which invests in the energy, technology and telecom sectors.[7]

Public Appointments and Honours

Davies was awarded a CBE in 2002 for his services to the financial sector.[8]

He was made a Peer in 2009 and was given ministerial posts in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and in the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills – overseeing UK Trade and Investment. He later held briefs in Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and in Trade, Investment and Small Business.[9] Lord Davies has been a consistent advocate for more female representation in executive positions, arguing for the need of a 25% quota threshold for women on the boards of FTSE 100 companies.[10]

Personal life

Davies is married with two children and is a fluent Welsh speaker. He is a keen sportsman and is interested in Welsh art, music and reading. Davies is the Chairman of the Royal Academy of Arts Trustees, and is an art collector.
