European committee for sports history

The European Committee for Sports History (CESH) is the non-profit organisation of the European sports historians. It was founded in Bordeaux in 1995. Founding President was Prof. Arnd Krüger. The Motto is 'Cognita historia futurum figurare' (you have to know history to develop the future).

The organisation has annual congreses since 1996, a College of Fellows which coopts the leading European sports historians who are capable to work in more than one European language (2013: 59 from 21 countries). James Riordan has been President of the College of Fellows. It stages annual congresses (so far in 8 different countries), has competitions for a Junior Scholar Award, has the annual Horst Ueberhorst Memorial Address for a leading senior sports historian and publishes a journal European Studies in Sports History with Rouen and Le Havre University Press.
