In the latest regional election, which took place on 21–22 April 2013, Debora Serracchiani of the Democratic Party narrowly defeated incumbent President Renzo Tondo of The People of Freedom. Serracchiani was the second woman to hold the office after Alessandra Guerra in 1994–1995.
