KTM Intercity (Malay: KTM Antarabandar) is the brand name for a group of diesel-hauled intercity train services in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB). Most services operate from Kuala Lumpur Sentral station in the Malaysian capital. A few operate solely along the East Coast line between Tumpat and Gemas and on to Singapore. There is also one cross-border train daily between Butterworth, Penang and Hat Yai, Thailand.
KTM Intercity has long enjoyed moderate success, but increasingly faces competition with road and air travel, as expressways (motorways) increase in number and budget airlines offer shorter travelling time. In 2006, KTM Intercity earned a profit of RM70.94 million as group revenue, hovering around the RM 65 million mark since 2001.[1]
Local and express services
There are two types of KTM Intercity train services: Express and Shuttle. Shuttle trains are commonly referred to as local trains, except the KL Sentral – Ipoh Shuttle. Long-distance passenger trains along the West-Coast route (Johor Bahru – Kuala Lumpur – Butterworth – Padang Besar – Hat Yai) are express trains calling only at major stations. The East-Coast line still has mostly shuttle trains calling at all stations and halts.
KTM Intercity also runs a shuttle service, the Shuttle Tebrau, between Johor Bahru and Woodlands, Singapore, providing an alternative to cross the busy Johor–Singapore Causeway.
Operational services
With effect from 1 July 2011, operations in Singapore have moved from Tanjong Pagar Railway Station to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint. All passengers will embark and disembark from the checkpoint, and it houses a combined CIQ facility for Malaysia and Singapore. As of 1 July 2015, all Intercity services and Shuttle 61/62 are being truncated at JB Sentral. Passengers who are going towards Woodlands CIQ may change and board the Shuttle Tebrau at JB Sentral.
