Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani is an Indian television period drama that airs on Zee TV. It premiered on July 27, 2015 and airs on weekdays at 9:30 PM.[1][2] The shows explores the love story of Rana Indravadan Singh Deo (Siddhant Karnick) and Rani Gayatri Devi essayed by the gorgeous and versatile (Drashti Dhami). NOTE: show is scheduled to go off air due to the makers and creatives failing in delivering an epic love story between Rana Indravadhan and Gayatri. More than half of the episodes so far have been dedicated to sautans and Rana Indravadhan's countless marriages.

Plot

During the 1940s, the royal family of Ameerkot is in debt to the region's wealthiest money lender, Govind Seth. His beautiful daughter Gayatri is attracted to Rana Indravadhan Singh Deo, known as Ranaji, the King who has recently returned after fighting in World War II. Ranaji encounters Gayatri numerous times but is unaware of her actual identity. His mother Rajmata Priyamvada finalizes a deal with Govind Seth and compensates for the debt by arranging the marriage of Ranaji with Gayatri. The latter agrees because she has developed feelings for the King but is oblivious of his hatred for her and his love for his dead wife, Rani Sulakshana. Gayatri is also oblivious to future Ranis and Sautans. After the wedding, Ranaji reveals the circumstances of their relationship and his true feelings to Gayatri, who is heartbroken. She leaves for her mother's home but returns. Thereafter the wedding Rana Indravadhan treats her awfully as he still has not got over his deceased wife. Soon after an imposter who looks like his deceased wife enters Amerkot. Rana Indravadhan allows the imposter to turn Gayatri into her maid and dethrones Gayatri. The imposter inflicts number of assaults on Gayatri. Drama unfolds and eventually the imposter is unmasked. A new villain in the name of Avdesh Singh Chauhan enters the kingdom and both engage in duels. Soon after Avdesh's sister Rageshwariya enters the scene. Her brother gets killed. Circumstances unfold and Rana Indravadhan gets married to his third wife. History repeats Rageshwariya is crowned and Gayatri turned into a maid in the presence of Rana Indravadhan.

Production

The show's premier moved the show Qubool Hai to 07:30 pm, fortifying the early primetime band. In regard to a fresh concept on primetime, Zee TV's business head Pradeep Hejmadi said, “Even when it comes to genres such as history and mythology, a most fascinating period that remains unexplored by Indian television is the pre-Independence era. This vibrant period of India’s history that saw a great upheaval also saw intense drama unfold in the lives of the royalty of the princely states. Behind empty walls of grandeur and fake displays of splendor was hidden the truth of erosion of wealth, insecurities, succumbing to British dominion, depression and bankruptcy. Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani is a story of love set against this most interesting canvas. It aims to give viewers an up close and personal view of the lifestyles and some of the most closely guarded secrets of the rich and royal of the 1940s. It is a work of fiction that draws inspiration from the lives of the royalty of that period."[3] Producers Sunjoy and Comall Wadhwa of Sphere Origins further add, “The idea has been to look back at a glorious period of history for inspiration and churn out a timeless masterpiece that will entertain and enthrall TV audiences. The most daunting task at hand has been the re-creation of the pre-Independence era and the majestic lifestyles of the kings and queens of the princely states. Enormous research has gone to ensure authentic representation of the era and to create magic on screen. We have on board an ensemble of extremely impressive actors who beautifully fit the parts they are playing. The show will definitely turn out to be a clutter-breaker and hopefully, the biggest fiction show of the year.”

Reception

The show began with good ratings and became one of the most watched shows across all GEC's and was one of the top ten serials of 2015. Soon after due to poor tracks the TRP's dropped and is currently scheduled to go offair.
