Dreams Beyond Grades is a novel written by Sujit Meher, an alumnus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology is a fashion designer and entrepreneur and a social activist. This is his début novel and was published in late 2015.[1]
Synopsis
The book is based on a true story about the importance of pursuing one’s dreams, no matter what.[2]
Sujit Meher- A guy who belongs to the most backward region of the country, where some people still struggle to meet the basic needs of life, where people don’t dare to dream big, and where people don’t even know the contemporary meaning of the word “Fashion” yet. Hailing from such a humble background, Sujit has set an example for the fellow dreamers to follow their heart to glory. He has literally travelled the distance to be a well known fashion designer and entrepreneur of the country at a very young age. Success came but with many prices and struggles.
Sujit always dreamt to make it big and different. He also nurses the dream of doing it better for the society. In spite of not being a good student in his school/college days and with scant idea about his career and life’s goal for a longer period of time, he trusted himself and followed his heart that pushed him through various experiences in life….from absolute ridiculous to sublime.
Protagonist has entrepreneurial dreams but finds no takers for it as they thought it grandiose for his background. He is instead ridiculed and asked to follow the well-tread and time tested engineering route that most of his contemporaries seem to have taken. As expected, this route is something that Sujit is not very keen on following.
Sujit was known as the lowest academic scorer of his batch being a “low grader”. But he never gave up. He worked hard to make his own brand label during his college time and created his brand labelled as “Tilottama” – named after his grandmother who was the biggest love of his life.
This memoir is about Sujit Meher and his arduous journey from being a nondescript small town guy to be a well known fashion designer and entrepreneur. Perhaps the book’s greatest strength is that it teaches the reader that one can do anything he/she wants to, irrespective of the compulsions or obligations, self-inflicted or prescribed by the society. The indomitable human spirit fuelled with passion and determination, triumphs at the end.
The book is written in first person, and embodies the spirit with which Sujit’s Childhood, his college life and friends, his love for a girl, generally loafing ways as a back-bencher and eventually metamorphosed to be a respected Fashion Designer and successful Entrepreneur – all that captured in ten chapters narrated in simple language.[1]
