Downtown Santa Monica (formerly Santa Monica) is an under-construction at-grade light rail station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system. It will be located near the intersection of 4th Street and Colorado Avenue in Downtown Santa Monica, California. When it opens, this station will be served as the Expo Line's new terminal station.[1] On that day, 4th/Colorado will become the western terminus of the Expo Line and the westernmost station in the Metro Rail system.

This station is currently under construction as part of Expo Phase 2. It was expected to open in late 2015 with the completion of the Expo Line Phase 2 Extension. [2] The expected completion date has been updated to June 2016.

Location and design

Downtown Santa Monica Station will be located in Downtown Santa Monica, off-street in the block bounded by 4th and 5th Streets, Colorado Avenue, and the 10 Freeway.[3]

Attractions

The site is located in the midst of Santa Monica's Civic Center, within a short walk of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica Pier, the Third Street Promenade, the Civic Auditorium, and Santa Monica High School. The block was formerly the location of a Sears auto center, which was demolished in 2010 to make way for the station.[4]

There are two options for the station alignment within the block. The primary alignment in the FEIR has the station angled between the southwest and northeast corners of the block. The design option (also included in the FEIR) has the station parallel to 4th Street. In either case, all tracks arrive from the east along Colorado Avenue, and a transit plaza will be located along Colorado Avenue near 4th Street. Metro is currently working with the City of Santa Monica to determine which option to build.
