Doug Smith (bassist)
Doug L. Smith (born September 21, 1946 in Scranton, Pennsylvania) is an American jazz bassist, band leader, and improvisational musician.[1] In addition to standard and classic jazz he specializes in improvised solo and group interactive live music.[2] He has performed on a number of jazz albums, CDs, videos, TV and radio specials.[1] [3][4] Smith attended Penn State University and Eastman School of Music in the 1960s. He also studied with bassist Dave Holland. He toured with the Penn State Improvisatory Ensemble, the Jazz Spokesman, Steve Gorn, Morris Rolland Band, the Tuesday Jazztet, The Dixieland All-Stars, and is part of Bob Dorough’s Schoolhouse Rock Live Band.[5]
He has performed with Al Cohn, Joe Cohn, Zoot Sims, Bob Dorough, Jerry Segal, Bob Degen, jazz saxophonist George Young, Dave Frishberg, Denny Seiwell, Larry Gelb, Cab Calloway, Vic Juris, Joe Morello, Marko Marcinko, Ron Stabinsky, Jesse Greene, Hal Linden, Bobby Rydell and jazz vocalists Kim Parker and Tara Michel Watkins, and in collaboration with performance artist John Bromberg. Smith has also worked with Peter Schumann of Bread and Puppet Theater, and with poet and author Lucia Dailey (Mine Seed).[6][7][8][9]
