Mirella Gregori (born October 7, 1967) mysteriously disappeared from Rome in May 1983, about 40 days before another girl's disappearance. The other girl was Emanuela Orlandi, a citizen of Vatican City. Both vanishings remain unsolved today.
International events
It was during the Cold War and both the Orlandi case and Gregori's disappearance involve claims by the Grey Wolves, an extremist Turkish group[1] demanding the release of Mehmet Ali Ağca, the Turkish man who shot the Pope in Saint Peter's Square on May 13, 1981. According to one of many of Mehmet Ali Ağca's accounts, the two girls' disappearances, and the disappearance of Soviet journalist, Oleg G. Bitov, from the Venice Film Festival on September 9 that same year, are closely linked. In an official notice (November 20 of 1984), the Grey Wolves admitted to having both girls.
Circumstances of disappearance
Gregori left her house telling her mother she "had a date" with a former schoolmate. She has not been seen since.
Suspects
During a visit of the Pope to a Rome parish, on December 15, 1985, Gregori’s mother, recognized a man in the papal escort as a person who often came to pick up her daughter at the house, perhaps even the same man who was seen with Orlandi, a few days before her disappearance.[2] His name was Raoul Bonarelli.[3][4]
