Diriangen

Diriangen was the tribal leader of the Chorotegas [1] who can rightfully be called the first resistance fighter of the Nicaragua. He fought against the Spanish in the 1520s, keeping them at bay for a time. Part of his legacy can be seen in the words from the famous folk song Nicaragua, Nicaraguita where the words are as follows:

Ay Nicaragua, Nicaragüita, la flor más linda de mi querer,
abonada con la bendita, Nicaragüita, sangre de Diriangen.
Oh Nicaragua, the most beautiful flower of my love,
Fertilized with the blessed blood of Diriangen.
