Deputy inspector general of police
A Deputy Inspector General of Police is a high-ranking official position. It is considered as high rank in several countries.
India
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), or Additional Commissioner of Police, in India, till 1973, was the second highest rank in the Indian police. It was highly selective rank, to which Indian Police Service (IPS), who had successful served as superintend of police, were promoted after careful screening after 18–22 years of service. Depending on size, each state had 3-6 DIGs. DIG rank, or post, in the 80s, become a time scale rank, like Inspector General of Police. It is now relatively junior time scale rank to which all IPS officers are promoted on completion of 14 years of service.[1]:p 155–56 There is no limit to the DIGs a state can have, as it is time scale appointment, and most states have several dozen DIGs.[1]:p 155–56 DIG is a time scale rank above a Senior Superintendent of Police or Deputy Commissioner of Police(9 years of service) and under an Inspector General of Police or Joint Commissioner of Police( 18 years of service).[2][3]
DIGs before 1973, wore army Lt colonels badges of rank. During the tenure of Indira Gandhi as PM, Ministry of Home (MHA) authorized DIGs to wear badges of rank similar to army brigadiers. Even after the substantial diminution of the span of control and responsibilities of DIGs, and its transition into a time scale appointment, there is no change in policy by MHA on DIGs badges of rank. DIGs span of control is the same as old Superintendent of Police. DIGs are in Pay-Band 4 (37400-67000) with grade pay Rs8900.[4] Delhi Police, which had two Deputy Inspector General (IG), till the seventies, now has over two dozen officers in ranks above that of DIG, and several dozen DIGs.[1]:p 155–56, section 3 [1]: p 177
Kenya
In Kenya, a Deputy Inspector-General of Police is a three-star rank of the Kenya National Police Service. (S)he is immediately below the Inspector-General and immediately above the Senior Assistant Inspector-General. Two officers hold this position and they command the Kenya Police Service and the Administration Police Service respectively.
Pakistan
In Pakistan, a Deputy Inspector General of Police is a one-star rank of the Police Service of Pakistan.
Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) is senior gazetted officer. It is the third most senior rank in the Sri Lanka Police Service, ranking below a Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) and above a senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) which were created in the 1980s. A DIG is normally in charge of policing in a police range or province.
