The Department of Community Safety was established in March 2009. The department formed from a merger of the former Departments of Emergency Services and Corrective Services. It is headquartered at Kedron in Brisbane.
It consists of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and Emergency Management Queensland. Jack Dempsey, the Minister for Police and Community Safety is minister responsible for the department.
Functions
The Department of Community Safety seeks to provide safe and secure communities through the provision of front line services.
The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is the primary provider of fire suppression and life rescue services to the residents and visitors in Queensland. The service employs around 2,100 full-time fire officers and another 2,100 auxiliary fire officers. Most of the state is covered by 34,000 volunteers and around 2,400 fire wardens in nearly 2,000 rural fire brigades.
Emergency Management Queensland plans and prepares for disasters, rescues and protect persons, property and the environment from disaster and emergency. It is responsible for disaster preparedness, disaster awareness and the coordination of various rescue, response and recovery services such as the State Emergency Service and air ambulance services.
Awards
The Department of Community Safety along with the Queensland Police Service established the 2010-2011 Queensland Flood and Cyclone Citation.[1]
