The Democratic Party of Japan (1996–1998) (民主党 Minshutō) is a now defunct centrist[1][2] political party in Japan. The party was one of the forerunners to the modern-day Democratic Party of Japan. The two leading lights of the party, Yukio Hatoyama and Naoto Kan, subsequently became Prime Minister one after the other at the end of the first decade of the 21st century.
