Democratic Ecologists

The Democratic Ecologists (Ecologisti Democratici, EcoDem) are a green faction within the Italian Democratic Party (PD).

Its leaders are Ermete Realacci and Fabrizio Vigni and its composed by both former members of the Democrats of the Left (Sergio Gentili, Gianni Mattioli, Edo Ronchi, Massimo Scalia and Fabrizio Vigni himself) and Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy (Roberto Della Seta, Francesco Ferrante and Ermete Realacci himself).[1] Most of those people were once members of the Federation of the Greens who left it between 1999 and 2004, after that Luigi Manconi (currently a Democrat too) was replaced as leader by Grazia Francescato and the party took a far left political line under Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio.

The EcoDem fought the election for the Constituent Assembly of the Democratic Party on 14 October 2007 within the Environment, Innovation, Labour list, led by Realacci along with Giovanna Melandri and Luigi Nicolais.[2] The list scored 8.1% at the election[3] and EcoDem elected more than 100 delegates to the Assembly.[4] Following this promising result, two members of the group were appointed by PD leader Walter Veltroni in the executive of the party: Ermete Realacci to the head of the Communication Department and Roberto Della Seta to the Environment Department.[5]

During a convention titled "Get-things-done Environmentalism" (Ambientalismo del fare) on 26–27 January 2008, the EcoDem presented their core proposals about environmental issues, including their idea of transforming Italy into "the country of solar energy".[6][7] The convention, organized by the EcoDem in collaboration with the Environmental Department of the party, was attended by Walter Veltroni, Joschka Fischer and Ségolène Royal.[8][9]

In the 2009 Democratic Party leadership election the faction supported Dario Franceschini.[10][11]
