Other Details:

The Aerocity, a project of the airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), was started with plans for 5,400 rooms. Approved in 2007, it was to be ready in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, but construction is still going on.

The Delhi Aerocity project spread over 45 acres was proposed by GMR Group led Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) in 2006 as part of the modernisation plan of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The plan included setting up of 12 hotels with a capacity of around 4,000 plus rooms in both luxury and budget categories. DIAL in 2007, leased out the 45 acres of land for development of the hospitality cluster to various leading national and international hotel brands.

As per one of the company’s corporate presentation development contracts were awarded to Hyatt, Ibis, Lemon Tree, Accor, Dusit, Red Fox and Aria Hotels. Construction on some of the hotels begun in 2008. The Aerocity project was suppose to be ready before the Commonwealth games which was scheduled in Delhi from 3-14 October 2010. However, the project got delayed. The Delhi police in 2011, raised objection on proximity of the hotels to the airport’s runway. Their concern was the runway was just 300 meters away from the hotels and the hotels overlook the VIP section of the airport. Unless the police gives a all clear on security, the hotels were asked not to start functioning.

The CCI has now allowed Aerocity to open after fulfilling few conditions which are: A fenced boundary wall of eight feet high are built around the 45-acre complex with a watch tower The hotel rooms facing the runway have fixed windows with toughened glasses and bullet proof films All hotels have their own security teams Delhi Police addresses the issues related to area security DIAL hires guards for perimeter security in and around the airport.
