The Defense Health Agency (DHA) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense that forms a key component of the U.S. Military Health System (MHS). It replaces the Tricare Management Activity as the U.S. military entity responsible for providing TRICARE, a health care program that provides civilian medical care to American service members and their dependents. TMA had provided TRICARE services since 1996.^[1]

History

The Defense Department established the DHA as part of a larger effort meant to reorganize its health care programs and services. The reorganization was based in part on the recommendations of a task force that issued a report on the management of military health care in 2011.^[2] Under the old system, many aspects of military health care were managed by the individual armed services (Army, Navy, and Air Force).^[1] DHA's mission is to "achieve greater integration of our direct and purchased health care delivery systems so that we accomplish the Department's Quadruple Aim: achieve medical readiness, improve the health of our people, enhance the experience of care, and lower our healthcare costs."^[3]

Organizational structure

The DHA operates under the authority and oversight of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. Assistant Secretary Jonathan Woodson, M.D., established the DHA's organizational structure, including six directorates (see organization tree at right).^[3]

The Joint Task Force National Capital Region Medical is a medical directorate within the DHA.^[2]
