Death of Senzo Meyiwa
On 27 October 2014 Senzo Meyiwa, the captain of the South Africa national football team, was shot and killed during a robbery.
Death
On 27 October 2014 Meyiwa was shot and killed during a robbery at the home of his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.[1]
The death raised issues in South Africa relating to the country's high crime and murder rate.[2]
Three people were believed to have been involved in the death and police released composite images of two of them.[3] One suspect was arrested and later freed.[4][5]
Funeral
Tens of thousands people attended Meyiwa's funeral in Durban.[6] A pose by his father Samuel at the funeral started an internet trend.[7]
Tributes
Following his death, Meyiwa was described as "one of the best goalkeepers in Africa",[8] and tributes came in from a number of prominent South African athletes.[9] Teammates also spoke of their "shock and devastation" at the death.[10] In his honour the South African national team moved the venue of their next match to Durban, his hometown.[11] He was posthumously nominated for the Confederation of African Football's Player of the Year.[12] SAFA announced plans to create a statue of Meyiwa, constructed from old guns.[13] in 5 May 2015, Orlando Pirate create the Senzo Meyiwa Foundation, and operation in 1 December 2015
