Dayahang Rai (born April 13, 1980) is a Nepalese actor, director, and play writer. He has won the National Award for Best Actor. He rose to prominence on the 2002s television series Yuva, Dalan and Hamro Team becoming an Idol actor for all.

Since then, Rai has taken on challenging and "larger-than-life" roles, starting with a leading actor in "Anagarik" in 2006, and then playing more others. He later found success in the film "Dashdhunga" (2009), the action film "Loot" (2012), the action film "Chhadke" (2013), the drama film "Badhshala" (2013), the musical comedy film "Karkash" (2013), the dark comedy "Jholey" (2014), the romantic comedy "Kabaddi" (2014) and its a sequels, the political drama film "Talakjung VS Tulke" (2014), and political drama film "Sambodhan" (2014). He has collaborated on four films with director and friend Ram Babu Gruung.

Rai is regarded as one of the biggest movie stars after in Nepal. Rai has been nominated for major acting awards, including two nominations for National Award. Rai won the National Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2009 for "Dashdhunga" and Best Actor of year in 2014 for "Sambodhan".[1][2]

Early Life

Dayahang Rai was born on April 13, 1980 AD in a remote village of Bhojpur district of Eastern Nepal. He belongs to a middle-class family of 7 members. His father had two wives. Dayahang has two younger sisters and an elder brother. Dayahang completed his high school from the Annapurna Secondary School, Dilpa in 1998. Before this he had finished his lower secondary level study from Pashupati Lower Secondary School that is still in his birthplace, Khawa VDC, Bhojpur. He is widely inspired by his mother who used to tell him many good fairy tales in his childhood. Dayahang, as a kindhearted child, used to think of oppressed people of those fairy tales. He used to wish if he could help them out. Dayahang started acting from his schooldays. He used to act out of different characters among with his schoolmates. Dayahang came to Kathmandu in 2001 to continue his college studies. Though, Dayahang had completed his intermediate level studies in Bhojpur Multiple College, with Geography as major subject. The subject couldn’t satisfy Dayahang himself. So, he came to Kathmandu and joined the Nepal Maanawiki Campus (then RR Campus) in Exhibition Road with Journalism as major subject. But he could not do well in studies. He then, motivated himself towards drama and stage shows. He used to visit theatre halls around city to watch different drama productions. He gradually was lured by the world of theatre.[3]

After participating in the play Talak Jung VS Tulke as an actor, Dayahang joined Actors’ Studio in 2007.

Film

Dayahang Rai started his film career as an actor in Yuwa, a tele film directed by Laba Sharma. The tele film was broadcast by Nepal Television in 2002. Then he worked in Dalan, another tele serial directed by Nabin Subba in 2003. The tele film was later broadcast by Nepal Television in 2009. He got his first opportunity as a lead actor in Anaagarik, a full feature film by Ram Babu Gurung that won two awards in International Indigenous Film Festivals. Dayahang acted in the most waited Nepali movie Mero Euta Saathi Chha in 2009, directed by Sudarshan Thapa. His work as a slow character was appreciated in that film. Dayahang Rai got a huge reputation after he did the movie Dashdhunga. Dashdhunga, a directional credit of Manoj Pandit, was the movie where his first major performance was noticeable. This movie has depicted the investigation process of the controversial road accident of Dashdhunga, where two influential leaders of Nepali politics, had lost their lives. Dayahang had acted the role of Ammar Lama, the driver and the only one witness of that accident. His hard work on the character and matter was well praised by audiences.

He won his first National Award for this film in 2009 as the best supporting actor alongside Anup Baral. He played a role of doctor in Aacharya (2010). Aacharya, directed by Prashant Rasaily was a movie based on the real-life story of Bhakta Raj Aacharya, a well known Nepali singer/composer. He played in Mero Love Story in 2010 as an actor. This movie was directed by Sudarshan Thapa. 2012 was the historic for Nepali Film Industry as the most blockbusters hit Loot film got released. It was the time when Nepal Film Development Board, the governmental institution to develop Nepali films was preparing to declare insurgency in the industry. Loot not only resisted the probable insurgency but it also changed the way to interpret Nepali film and its makers. Rai played the vital role to make this film a success. He has not only acted in this film but also co-wrote the dialogues of this film. His acting as the character Gofle earned a number of reputation and appreciation among audiences. For the same film, he won the TV Filmy Popular Award for character artist.

Personal Life
