Dawna Friesen (born in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian television journalist, currently the chief anchor and executive editor of Global National.[1] She was previously a foreign correspondent for NBC News based in its London bureau.

Early life

A graduate of Red River College,[1] Friesen has worked in journalism since 1985, working in Thunder Bay, Ontario; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Brandon, Manitoba; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Career

CBC News

Friesen reported and anchored for CBC Television in Vancouver and for CBC Newsworld.

CTV News

Friesen then moved to CTV as a national reporter for the network,[1] and an anchor for CTV NewsNet.[1] She previously served as a backup host for CTV's Canada AM and a parliamentary reporter for CTV News in its Ottawa bureau.

NBC News

She moved to NBC News in 1999, and was a foreign correspondent in the network's London bureau.[2] While at NBC, Friesen covered international stories including the Israeli Palestinian conflict and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Friesen also spent month in various Middle Eastern countries, covering stories such as the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Karachi.[3]

Friesen also covered elections in the United Kingdom, and later returned to Vancouver to take part in NBC's coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics. She reported and contributed to various NBC News platforms, including NBC Nightly News, The Today Show and MSNBC.

Global National

Friesen succeeded former anchor Kevin Newman and began anchoring Global National on September 20, 2010.[1] In 2011, she led the live coverage for Global National of the Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton and the 2011 Vancouver Stanley Cup riot.

Awards

Friesen was previously awarded an Emmy for her part in NBC's coverage of the night that Barack Obama was first elected president of the United States, she also won a Gemini Award in 2011 for Best News Anchor.

Personal life

Friesen personally knows a CTV journalist, Tom Kennedy.[1] They have one son.
