David Stern (conductor)

David Stern is an American conductor born on May 21, 1963. He is the son of violinist Isaac Stern.

Biography

Having studied at the Juilliard School, he started his career as an assistant to John Eliot Gardiner, then as principal conductor of Concerto Köln. At the same time, David Stern collaborated with modern orchestras such as the Kammerorchester Basel and the London Mozart Players with which he regularly tours. He also conducted various ensembles such as the Boston Haydn & Haendel Society, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, the New Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestra Nazionale de la RAI.

In 2003 he founded the Opera Fuoco ensemble, with which he explores a large, mainly lyrical, repertoire using instruments of the era. David Stern was Music Director of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra and Opera (Switzerland) until the 2011/12 season when he was replaced by Otto Tausk. He currently serves as Music Director of the Israel Opera.
