Real Friends is an American rock band from Tinley Park, Illinois.[1] The band has released six EPs and one studio album. The band is currently signed to Fearless Records.

History

Formation and EPs (2010–13)

Kyle Fasel and Dave Knox started the band in late 2010, later adding vocalist Dan Lambton and drummer Aaron Schuck. The band recorded its debut EP, This Is Honesty, in the spring of 2011. Following the release of the EP, the band began playing shows around the Midwest, but soon after decided to revamp its sound as the band members did not want to continue with with the musical direction they were headed in. During the writing process of Everyone That Dragged You Here, Aaron Schuck decided to leave the band to pursue a career in race car driving. His departure led to the addition of Brian Blake on drums and Eric Haines as the second guitarist.

Maybe This Place Is the Same and We're Just Changing (2013–present)

The band announced in late 2013 that it had signed to Fearless Records, along with plans of a studio album in the following year. The band released its debut album, Maybe This Place Is the Same and We're Just Changing on July 22, 2014.[2] The album sold a little over 10,000 copies in the first week of sales, putting them at number 24 on the Billboard 200. The band played on the 2014 Vans Warped Tour supporting the album's release, appearing on the Journey's Stage. More Acoustic Song EP was released for Record Store Day on April 28, 2015.[3][4] One of the tracks, an acoustic version of "Late Nights in My Car", features Kevin Jordan from This Wild Life.[5]

Style and influences

Real Friends has been described as pop punk[6][7] and emo.[8] Punknews reviewer said "If American Football went totally pop-punk, Real Friends would be the result."[9] Vocalist Dan Lambton has been described as a cross between The Starting Line's Kenny Vasoli, The Wonder Years' Dan Campbell and The Dangerous Summer's AJ Perdomo.[6] American Football, Brand New, Jimmy Eat World, The Starting Line, Saves the Day, and Taking Back Sunday have been cited as influences.[10]

Side projects

Lambton joined with Knuckle Puck members Joe Taylor and Ryan Rumchaks to form Rationale.[11] With Rationale., Taylor plays guitar and vocals, Rumchaks plays drums, and Lambton on guitar and vocals.[11] "Hangnail" was made available for streaming on December 5, 2015, and their debut EP Confines followed four days later.[11]
