Dallas John Green[1] (born September 29, 1980) is a Canadian musician who releases music under the name City and Colour. He is also known for his contributions as the vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. In 2005, he debuted his first full-length album, Sometimes, which achieved Platinum certification in 2006. City and Colour began performing in small intimate venues while Alexisonfire disappeared for some time.[2]

Name

During an interview at the 2008 NXNE festival with DJ Dave Bookman of Toronto's CFNY-FM, Green confirmed that he was indeed named after the famous major league pitcher/manager of the same name. He stated that, although he was born on September 29, 1980, he had gone without a name at first; his mother was considering naming him Graham-Todd Green, but his father had bet on Philadelphia Phillies during the 1980 World Series that October and, after the team won, his parents decided on the name Dallas after the Phillies' manager.[3]

Career

Pre-Alexisonfire

Before joining Alexisonfire, Green was in a band called Helicon Blue, producing several songs before breaking up. The three piece band also featured Marcel Lanteigne on bass and vocal, and Nicholas Osczypko on drums. The band recorded a self-titled release with Greg Below from Distort Entertainment, who also recorded a second record with the band which included; My Last Breath, Sunder, Greater Victory & Perpetual Healing.

In 2000, Green recorded his first known demo, Simple Songs. It was not until after this demo that he started writing under the City & Colour name. The demo contains versions of songs that were later released on his full-length albums as well as several unreleased demos of unreleased songs. It was never released publicly, and there is no known physical copy. It now circulates on the World Wide Web in mid-quality.mp3 files.

Alexisonfire

Dallas began playing with Alexisonfire in late 2001. They released four albums (Alexisonfire, Watch Out!, Crisis, and Old Crows / Young Cardinals) and several EPs before disbanding in 2011 due to Dallas' decision to focus on his work in City and Colour full-time.[4]

Dallas came up with the name of the band from an episode on Discovery Channel. This specific episode was about contortionism. In this show there was a segment on a stripper who added contortionism into her show, as well as lactating and breathing fire. The woman's stage name was Alexis Fire, and the segment was called Alexisonfire. He thought that this would be a cool name for a band, and that is where it all started.[5]

In 2003, Dallas appeared (along with Alexisonfire vocalist George Pettit) on Jude the Obscure's album "The Coldest Winter", doing additional vocals on 3 songs. He contributed vocals to Neverending White Lights' collaborative album Act 1: Goodbye Friends of the Heavenly Bodies, released in 2005, on the song "The Grace". Green provided additional vocals on the track "INRihab" with Every Time I Die as well as on the track "Black Albino Bones" with Fucked Up on their second full length album, The Chemistry of Common Life.

City and Colour

City And Colour's first music video, "Save Your Scissors", from the now platinum-rated album Sometimes, was released on January 17, 2006, featuring some of his best friends, band mates and favourite places in his hometown, St. Catharines, Ontario. The second video, "Comin' Home", went number one on MuchMoreMusic's video countdown.

City and Colour also released a live CD/DVD titled Live on March 6, 2007 which includes two different live performances and a special performance with Ron Sexsmith. A limited edition has also been released at the same time. It included a USB key with footage from MMVA and Much on Demand performances.[6]

On October 22, 2008, Dallas appeared on stage with Canadian duo Tegan and Sara at The Fonda in Los Angeles. He came out during their encore and performed a mellow version of their song The First, he is good friends with both members of the band.[7]

On February 12, 2008, City and Colour released a new full-length studio album, Bring Me Your Love. It was published under the label Dine Alone Records. The music video for the first single, "Waiting...", was released on January 24, 2008. On June 6, 2008, "Sleeping Sickness", the second single for the album, was issued and on June 27, a music video was made by Montreal-based director Vincent Morisset.[8] This second single also features The Tragically Hip's Gordon Downie's vocals in the second verse.

Bravo! aired an hour-long City and Colour performance as a band for their Live at the Concert Hall... series on August 26, 2008. The performance included interviews; several songs from his latest album, Bring Me Your Love; and also a few songs from Dallas' début, Sometimes, where he included his backing band into the songs.

While on tour 2010 with Alexisonfire, Dallas also sung a part of Billy Talent's song "Surrender".

In May 2009, Dallas appeared on CBC Radio's Q for an interview with Jian Ghomeshi, as well as a solo performance of three songs; "Body in a Box" and "Waiting..." from the album Bring Me Your Love, as well as "Comin' Home" from his debut album Sometimes.

On June 7, 2011, City and Colour released another full-length studio album entitled Little Hell. The first single was 'Fragile Bird', which received much radio play.

On August 8, 2011 Dallas quit Alexisonfire, stating he wanted to focus more on his solo work.

Green appeared on Kids' CBC on February 6, 2012; performing a children's version of his song "The Girl," retitled "The Gift" with new lyrics about buying presents for Mamma Yamma.[9]

During an interview with NBHAP in June 2013, Dallas told that he does not think he musically will ever find his way home, since he is always searching for something else.[10]

You+Me

On September 8, 2014 Green announced a collaboration with Pink. The duo, performing under the name You+Me, released an album titled Rose Ave. on October 14.[11] The album debuted at number one on the Canadian Albums Chart and at number four on the Billboard 200.[12][13]

Personal life

Green went to Denis Morris Catholic High School in St. Catharines, Ontario.

In 2008, he married Canadian television host Leah Miller.[14]

Green has been playing guitar since the age of 8 and writing music since he was a young teen.[15][5]

At the age of 8, Dallas had also started skateboarding and playing baseball. Dallas has 1 sibling Jordin Green & 1 niece Phoenix [16]
