DSB International School also Deutsche Schule Bombay is centrally located in the metropolitan city, Mumbai, India. DSB International is the only school in Mumbai to provide the National Curriculum of England and the German Curriculum of Thűringen.

History

The growing diplomatic relationship between India and Germany and the establishment of major German companies in India attracted many German citizens in the late 50s and early 60s. Keen to educate their children in German language and according to a German curriculum, the Deutscher Schulverein (now DSB International School) was born, in 1961. From the earliest years the school community took German-speaking children from many nations including Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy and Chile.

The school rapidly developed a strong ethos, focused on education of the whole child and with an emphasis on personalised learning and in 1967 the school moved into Garden Campus in Breach Candy; current home of our Lower Primary School. Typical of the commitment that our staff had to the school, teachers were involved in the design of the garden and each year the gardener climbed the palms to harvest the coconuts. As the school grew, it developed a strong academic reputation and became an active participant in sports and artistic competitions.

During the 1990s, there were fewer German families living in Mumbai so the school took the important step in 2001 of starting an International Section based on the English National Curriculum. Together, the German and International sections forged a new identity based on a synergy of their strengths - all the while remaining true to DSB’s holistic educational tradition. The international section started as a pre-school playgroup and is now offering primary and secondary programs.

With a growing successful secondary section and starting the IB Diploma, DSB International School needed a new home and in 2014, we moved to beautiful new premises: Aurum House, located at the foot of Malabar Hill. The building’s internal spaces, specially designed to facilitate modern learning styles that will equip students for the 21st Century creates a fantastic learning environment, and we can proudly say that DSB International School with its two campuses is the only truly international school in historical, verdant South Mumbai.

Curriculum

DSB International School follows the English National Curriculum for students aged 3 – 14 years. Cambridge IGCSE is offered to 14- to 16-year-olds and the IB diploma Programme caters for pre-university 16- to 19-year-olds.

The German section follows the curriculum for German Schools Abroad (Thüringen) up to the age of 14 years. After this point, students join the International Section to take IGCSE and IBDP which are both fully recognised in Germany.
