Venus atmospheric probe |
DAVINCI (Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging) is a proposed mission concept for an atmospheric probe to Venus.
DAVINCI is planned study the chemical composition of Venus' atmosphere during a 63-minute descent.[1][2] It will help to determine whether there are active volcanoes on the surface of Venus today and how the surface interacts with the atmosphere of the planet.[1]
DAVINCI was selected on 30 September 2015 as one of five semifinalists for Mission #13 of the Discovery Program.[1] The winner will be chosen around September 2016,[3] and must be ready to launch by the end of 2021.[4][5]
The principal investigator is Lori Glaze of the Goddard Space Flight Center.
If selected, the mission would be entitled to a 450 million USD budget, and an additional 10 million USD would be awarded if it uses a special 3D woven heat shield.[6]

Venus as seen in UV light, showing the hazy atmosphere that has complicated traditional surface exploration yet has been the subject of exploration itself. It has produced a number of surprises including the "V" pattern shown here and the high speed winds, intense pressures, and exotic chemistry but the mystery that continues is seen even this image, what is absorbing the UV is unknown even by 2014.[1]
