Qualification

The cycling competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will take place between 6 August and 20 August. The venues will be the Rio Olympic Velodrome for track cycling in the Barra Cluster, the Olympic BMX Center for BMX and the Olympic Mountain Bike Park for mountain biking in the Deodoro Cluster and the Flamengo Park for the road cycling disciplines in the Copacapana Cluster. Eighteen events will be contested.[1][2]

Cycling events have been contested in every Summer Olympics programme since the first modern Olympiad in 1896 alongside athletics, artistic gymnastics, fencing and swimming. Compared to the cycling at the 2012 Olympics, there were no changes in the Olympic cycling programme.[1] The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced in February 2013 its intention to ask the IOC to extend the cycling programme by three events for both men and women, including the return of the points races on the track, a BMX freestyle event and a mountain bike eliminator but in August 2013 the IOC stated that the cycling programme will be the same as in 2012.[3]
