Customs House Port Adelaide is a commercial office building that houses the Australian Customs & Border Protection Service, South Australian Department of Correctional Services and Australian Maritime Safety Authority. It is located at 220 Commercial Road in Port Adelaide, a suburb of the city of Adelaide, South Australia. It is approximately 11 km northwest of the CBD.[1][2][3]

The building has 5,486 square metres of floor space across three levels, undercover car parking for 26 vehicles and a detached bond store.[4]

History

As the South Australian colony's largest port, Port Adelaide has been the destination for the vast majority of inbound shipping since its early history. Between 1838-1987 Port Adelaide had four Customs Houses.[5][6][7]

The Customs Service was located on Commercial Road with frontage between North Parade and Nile Street between 1958 and 1987 when it moved to the current building, which had been created as part of the Portland Canal Development at 220 Commercial Road.[6][7]

In 1998 the property was purchased by the current owner, Shaun Bonétt's Precision Group.[8]

Transport

The new position is within one hundred metres of the Port Adelaide railway station, and is accessible via the Adelaide Metro bus service, route 18. The neighbouring Port Canal Shopping Centre also has 1104 car parking spaces.[9]
