Park Se Yoon (Hangul: 박세윤), most commonly known as Crucial Star (Hangul: 크루셜 스타), is a South Korean rapper, composer, lyricist and producer. At the age of 17, he performed with Libra Twins,[1] a band popular in the Korean hip hop industry, and he later moved on to try an open-audition and won, landing himself with a deal with a Korean hip hop label, Soul Company.[2][3] At the beginning of 2012, he released a free digital single, which highlights the aftermath of disbandment of Soul Company.[4] He recently left Grandline Entertainment, and is now an independent artist.

Biography

He was born the youngest son to a family of 6, including his elder brother, elder sister, younger sister and parents. His father is Park Hang Ryul, an acclaimed Korean painter, and on season 4 of Show Me the Money he revealed that his family (except his youngest sister) pursue a career in art. He was going to do the same, having a flair for art as shown in his painting of his "Midnight" album cover, but said that art was no fun.

Personal life

On October 5, Crucial Star's entertainment company officially published a statement confirming that Crucial Star and Unpretty Rapstar Vol 2 contestant Heize were in a relationship. "It is true Crucial Star and Heize are dating. The two of them have been dating for two years. It's a truth already known among their fans."[5] According to the agency, before Heize was active, she visited Crucial Star's concert venue where the two met and started dating. Meanwhile, Crucial Star is fully supportive of her promotions.

On October 12, it was reported that Crucial Star and Heize had in fact broken up months before reports of their relationship surfaced. Upon seeing news of their relationship, Heize asked the producers of Unpretty Rapstar 2 to explicitly mention that she and Crucial Star were no longer in a relationship, clearing up any misunderstandings. The producers complied; during her diss battle with KittyB on the 5th episode of Unpretty Rapstar 2, KittyB used Crucial Star's most popular song "I'm Okay" as her beat, and the captions referred to Crucial Star as Heize's ex-boyfriend.[6]

Style

Crucial has added a unique style to his stomping beats, which takes his skills, as a rapper, to a whole new level. His rapping delivery is similar to of Kid Cudi, Drake and a lot of other American rappers. He even mentions that he is strongly influenced by their musicality and vocal arrangements, which defines his own character and personality as a musician in the Korean hip hop industry. For example, the opening song, from the extended play (EP) A Star Goes Up, 'It's My Turn', has the same idea inspired by 'My Time' by Fabolous.

Mad Clown VS Crucial Star

At the beginning of 2010, Crucial Star released a collaborated mini-album with a fellow member under the same record label, Soul Company. The member was named Mad Clown, born as Jo Dongrim (조동림). Crucial Star composed two of the four tracks from the album and were called 'I Just Want U' and 'iPod Girl', which features Pento. 'I Just Want U' carries a lot of bass with a whistle/flute sound, which takes the track to a whole new level and makes it catchy as the lyrics fuse well with the beat and absorbs the listener with the relaxing melody.
The second track,'iPod Girl', again composed and produced by Crucial Star, is a similar to the first one, but they both have their differences. The lyrics have a smooth flow and is more for the modern generation.[7][8][9][10] The other two tracks, '죽 먹었어?!' & '이별은' (Feat. DC), were composed by Mad Clown, bringing himself to express his lyrical skills to the public.[11]

Disbandment of Soul Company

Soul Company released an official statement regarding the company's disbandment, as well as announcing a final concert: 'Soul Company’s Last Concert: A Spring, Gushed', which took place at AX Korea, on November 27, held to commemorate their teams' hard work over the company's 8-year history.[12] Finding it difficult to cover all the members’ individual music styles and capabilities, Soul Company decided to disband, stated by rappers Kebee Jerry. K, as representatives of Soul Company. Soul Company, which started back in 2004, played a central role in the Korean underground hip-hop world by turning out total 24 artists, releasing 73 singles, and opening 59 concerts for the last 8 years[13]

Having released two extended plays (EPs), A Star Goes Up and A Star From The Basement, at the start of 2012, Crucial Star released a new and free digital single, dubbed as 'Nothing Lasts Forever', which reflects on the aftermath of the disbandment of Soul Company and suggests his ongoing hopes, dreams and determination, having to go through the obstacles and a hard reality of life.[14]

Show Me The Money Season 4

| note: spoilers from the season

Crucial Star appeared on the fourth season of the South Korean TV Series, Show Me the Money. This was unannounced, only to be revealed on the day of the audition through a photograph taken and posted by a fan. However, in the auditions round he forgot his lyrics, and hence resulting in an elimination by producer Tablo. He brazenly rapped a second time, getting his lyrics right despite facing the elimination. Tablo responded by apologizing, saying that although he enjoyed Crucial Star's music, he fairly gave everyone a fair chance. He continued by saying that if he gave one person a second chance, it would not make sense, and therefore he did not get through the next round. Crucial Star later posted a picture to his instagram, which read "It is true that I auditioned for Show Me The Money 4 yesterday. I quietly applied because I wanted to challenge myself but because I was nervous and forgot my lyrics, in the end I was eliminated. But in the end I was able to rap a verse I prepared from start to finish so I don't have any regrets. I applied to at least slightly overcome my fear of cameras and I wanted to prove I could do it myself. I cheer on all the contestants who passed the audition"
