The Countrywide Basketball League or the CWBL is an upcoming regional basketball league in the Philippines set to commence on March 13, 2016.[2]
Season format
The basketball league is planned to be patterned after the NBA's model of having an East and West conferences or PBA's tournament. based on a created adapted of regional semi-commercial professional basketball league formatted liked now defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), Liga Pilipinas (LP) and Philippine Basketball League (PBL). The league in any seasons will have two conferences and a "National finals" is planned to determine the overall the National champion. For its inaugural conference, CWBL had limited the number of participants to only eight teams maximum.
Teams
The league will be participated by at most 8 teams; 4 from Luzon including Metro Manila, and another 4 from Visayas and Mindanao. The Cagayan Rising Suns has expressed plans to join the league after Team Manager Frederic Collado criticized the penalizing of Head Coach Alvin Pua by the PBA D-League for which the team was a member of.[3]
In the Visayas, Cebu-based team Cebu Landmasters has confirmed their intention to join the league. The team will be owned by Joe Soberano and Bogo, Cebu Mayor Junie Martinez.[4]
Also included are MP Hotel Warriors-General Santos of Manny Pacquiao and Pagadian City.
Rules
The CWBL will prioritize college graduates but they will only be eligible to participate until they reach the age of 32. Foreign players are ineligible although Filipino-Foreigners are allowed to participate if they fulfill a set of given documents.
Media Coverage
According to CWBL chairman, Rey Gamboa, the coverage of the games will focus on localities. The league will be exclusively covered by ABS-CBN Sports nationwide and its regional counterparts with telecast nationwide and all ABS-CBN Regional Network Group.
Playing venues
Most of the games of the CWBL are planned to be played in the provinces.
