The championship is organised by the Connacht council of the Gaelic Athletic Association and is played in Spring. The winners represent Connacht in the All-Ireland Under-21 Football Championship semi-finals.

Roscommon are the current (2015) Connacht Under-21 Football Champions. They beat Galway in Tuam Stadium to retain the title. It is the first time Roscommon won back to back Connacht titles.
