1 Sengkang Mall (formerly known as Compass Point, Chinese: 勘宝坊) is a suburban shopping mall located in the town centre of Sengkang New Town, Singapore. The mall was built as an integrated development together with a condominium, Compass Heights which is located above the mall. Originally opened on August 1, 2002,[1] the mall closed on October 26, 2015 for upgrading works and is scheduled to open at the end of 2016.[2]

History

Compass Point was built as an integrated development together with the adjacent Sengkang MRT/LRT station and Compass Heights condominium.[3][4] Constructed at a cost of S$230 million,[5][6] the shopping mall started operations in August 2002.[1] The shopping centre was the first major mall to open on the North East Line.[5]

On June 19, 2015, it was announced that Metro, one of the mall's anchor tenants, will be closing its 12 years old outlet in the mall due to the challenging retail scene in Singapore.[7]

Upgrading works

Frasers Centrepoint announced that the mall will be closed from 26 October 2015 to the fourth quarter of 2016 for renovations. The facilities of the mall will be upgraded to the latest safety, environmental and energy efficiency standards and the tenant mix will be refreshed with new retail concepts.[8]

Before the renovation works, the mall was Singapore's first thematic suburban shopping mall based on the theme of learning. Educational panels and informative posters are mounted on railings and walls, which feature interesting trivia based on particular themes updated periodically. After getting feedback from the public and commissioning a survey of residents in the area, conducted by international property adviser DTZ Debenham Tie Leung Limited, the mall's developer, Centrepoint Properties, proposed the learning theme for the shopping mall to cater to the predominantly young families of Sengkang New Town.[5][9][10]

The shopping mall had an approximate retail area of 269,098 square feet (25,000.0 m2). Retail space was spread out over four storeys and a basement. Each storey of the shopping centre was named after the five major continents, with motifs showing different aspects of that continent, such as flora and sea-transport vessels:[5] Oceania (basement storey); Asia (ground floor); Europe (2nd storey); The Americas (3rd); and Africa (4th).

Incidents

On 27 December 2008, a roadshow for local drama "The Little Nyonya" featuring the main cast of the drama was held at the ground level, and the response was extremely overwhelming with approximately 5,000 people present, with every floor being filled up. Due to the large crowd, some tiles on the ground floor of the mall cracked and popped towards the end of the event.[11][12][13][14]

Compass Point is well-served by public transport, being located just next to the Sengkang MRT/LRT station and Sengkang Bus Interchange. Being easily accessible, the shopping centre serves as the main suburban shopping mall for residents of Sengkang New Town.
