In 2002 the than SDP Government of Ivica Račan agreed to invest 75 million euros into expanding the hospital, which made it possible to merge many of the clinics that were spread-out across the city into one central location while also adding a new surgical wing with an additional 36 operating theaters. By the end of 2008 most of the works were completed, although some work is still ongoing, the hospital once completed should have around 2500 beds.
