Location of Cleveland Pools in Somerset |
Cleveland Pools in Hampton Row, Bath, Somerset, England is a semi-circular lido built, by John Pinch the elder, in 1815.[1] It is believed to be the oldest public outdoor swimming pool in England.[2]
The pool was open to the River Avon. The Georgian site included 12 dressing rooms.[3]
The site was closed in the 1970s and was a for a short time used as a trout farm. In 2004 Bath and North East Somerset council put the site up for sale or long lease,[4] and it was added to the English Heritage Buildings at Risk Register.[5] There has subsequently been a campaign, supported by The Prince's Regeneration Trust and the Trevor Osborne Property Group,[6] to renovate it. The proposed plans would restore the main pool and children's pool, and see the addition of a cafe, exhibition room and children's climbing wall.[7]
In 2013 an appeal to raise £3 million was launched to restore the pools.[8] In August 2014 the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded £4.5 million to cover 85% of the costs.[9]
