Christopher Alan "Chris" Smith (born 30 June 1981) is an English semi-professional footballer who plays as a defender.

Smith started his career with the Leeds United youth system, but at the age of 15 he joined Reading in their youth system. After three years, in 1999, he signed a professional contract before joining Third Division club York City in 2001. In his first season with the club, 2001–02, Smith failed to establish himself as a first team regular, but in 2002–03 he became a fans' favourite. However, 2003–04 saw York relegated into the Conference National and after being released by the club he dropped into non-League football, spending a season with Stafford Rangers in the Conference North.

He joined Conference North club Worcester City in 2005 and in 2006–07 he was named the club's Player of the Year. After a third season at Worcester, during which he was captain, the club was re-allocated to play in the Conference South, which led to Smith signing for Conference North team Tamworth in 2008. In his first season at Tamworth, 2008–09, the club won the Conference North title and after serving his second season as captain he signed for Mansfield Town in 2010. He joined former club York on loan later that year before signing for the club permanently in 2011. Smith captained York to victory in the 2012 FA Trophy Final and 2012 Conference Premier play-off Final at Wembley Stadium, the latter seeing the club promoted to League Two.

Career

Early career

Born in Derby, Derbyshire,[1] Smith began his career in the Leeds United youth system as a schoolboy having been spotted playing for a local junior team in Derby.[3][4] After being released by Leeds he joined Reading's youth system at the age of 15, spending three years as a trainee before signing a professional contract on 22 June 1999.[1][4][5]

York City

Smith had a two-game trial with Third Division team York City at the end of the 2000–01 season and despite impressing manager Terry Dolan York were unable to offer him terms.[6] However, with him due to be released by Reading,[7] he eventually signed for York on a two-year contract on 26 May 2001.[8] He suffered from flu in August and this was expected to keep him out of the team for a week.[9] He made his first team debut as a 75th minute substitute in a 3–2 defeat against Exeter City on 6 October.[10] Smith made his first start for York in the following game, a 3–0 defeat at Hartlepool United on 13 October,[11] with his performance being described by Dolan "as the one bright spot" from the game.[12] However, following York's 4–1 defeat by Kidderminster Harriers on 23 October Dolan placed the blame on the team's inexperienced defence.[13] He did not feature in the team again until being recalled for the FA Cup first round 0–0 draw with Colchester United on 17 November.[14] Smith gave a "near-faultless" display when York beat his former club Reading 2–0 in the FA Cup second round on 8 December.[15] He was forced to miss the Christmas period due to a virus; this resulted in him losing his place in the team, with Mike Basham, Gary Hobson and Matt Hocking forming "a solid barrier at the back".[16][17] He made his return to the team after starting in a 1–1 draw with Torquay United on 15 January 2002 but after being sent off for the first time in his career in a 3–0 defeat at Rushden & Diamonds on 19 January he was handed a one-match suspension.[18][19] Smith was substituted at half-time in York's 1–1 draw at Halifax Town on 12 February due to a tight hamstring,[20] although he was deemed fit to play in the next game against Hartlepool.[21] However, this hamstring injury continued to keep him out of action into March when he resumed training.[22][23] His first appearance in over two months came in a 3–0 victory over Bristol Rovers on 16 April.[24] Having failed to establish himself as a first team regular,[25] Smith finished 2001–02 with 19 appearances for York.[26]

He started 2002–03 well, taking his place in the team due to injuries to other players.[25] He made his first appearance in the opening game, a 1–1 draw at Macclesfield Town on 10 August, with chairman John Batchelor claiming Smith had a "wonderful game and if we can get that sort of attitude from everyone in the team we won't have any problems".[27] Due to feeling unwell with a stomach ache Smith was substituted after half time in York's 4–3 victory over Torquay on 17 August,[28] although he made an immediate return to the team for a 2–1 defeat at Scunthorpe United on 24 August.[29][30] Smith was dropped to the bench for a 1–1 with Wrexham on 29 October due to a change in formation, having started every game in 2002–03 prior to this game, although he made an appearance as a 48th-minute substitute.[31] He suffered a hamstring injury in November and returned to training later that month.[32][33] He made his return to the team in a 1–0 victory at Rochdale on 23 November, although after playing in the 2–1 victory over Swansea City on 26 November he fell out of contention.[34][35] He suffered a knee injury in December, and after returning to fitness made his return in a 3–0 defeat at Boston United on 26 December.[34][36][37] Smith received his first red card of the season for a second bookable offence in a 1–1 with Hull City on 30 December; this resulted in him serving a one-match suspension.[38] The ban resulted in him missing York's game against Torquay in January 2003, and after a short spell on the sidelines he made his return to the team in a 2–1 victory over Macclesfield.[34][38][39] He was forced to miss a 0–0 draw with Kidderminster on 21 April due to illness.[40] Smith finished the 2002–03 with 39 appearances for York, and was described as the "surprise star of the season".[34][41] Despite being in outstanding form and becoming a fans' favourite he was not offered a new contract with York at the end of the season, although he hoped still to have a future at the club.[42][43] He was eventually offered a new deal by player-manager Chris Brass, and in July agreed a new one-year contract with York.[44][45]

Smith underwent a hernia operation in the close-season, but due to swelling and bruising around the bone his return was delayed and was an unused substitute for York's first game of 2003–04.[46][47][48] He returned in a reserve team game against Hartlepool in September, which was his first competitive game in nearly six months.[47] He subsequently returned to training and made his first senior appearance of the season as a second-half substitute in a 2–0 defeat at Bury on 30 September, although Smith commented that "It was my first appearance but unfortunately it was not one to remember".[49][50] Due to injuries to other players his first start of the season came in a 2–1 defeat at Halifax in the Football League Trophy first round Northern section on 14 October.[51][52] This was followed by his first league start in a 1–1 draw with Boston on 18 October, and York went on a seven-game unbeaten run in the league with Smith in defence alongside Brass and Richard Hope.[52] He was handed his fifth yellow card of the season in a 2–1 victory at Rochdale on 28 December, meaning he missed York's game against Northampton Town on 17 January 2004 through a one-match suspension.[53] He missed York's game against Lincoln City on 17 February due to a swollen hip and made his return in the following game, a 2–0 defeat at Boston on 14 February.[52][54][55] Smith was dropped for York's game against Scunthorpe on 9 March after failing to be vocal and organisational in defence in a 4–1 defeat at Kidderminster on 6 March, which was expected of him due to Brass' absence from the team.[56][57] His return came in a 0–0 draw against Torquay on 13 March, with Brass praising his strong performance.[58] However, he was dropped for the subsequent game against Macclesfield on 4 April, with Brass saying "I just felt I needed to change things about".[59] He returned to the starting line-up for York's following game, a 2–0 defeat at Cambridge United on 9 April.[60] After York's relegation to the Conference National was confirmed in April it was announced that Smith would be released when his contract expired in June, despite having been verbally offered a new contract over a month before.[61][62] He finished 2003–04 with 30 appearances.[52]

Stafford Rangers

Smith dropped into non-League football after signing for Conference North club Stafford Rangers on a free transfer in the summer of 2004.[63] He was suffering with a knee injury in September and had an operation in October.[64][65] His debut came in a 3–2 victory over Stalybridge Celtic on 14 December, and he scored his first goal with the winner in a 1–0 victory at Moor Green on 19 April 2005.[66] He finished 2004–05 with 23 appearances and 1 goal for Stafford.[66]

Worcester City

Smith joined fellow Conference North side Worcester City on a free transfer on 25 May; manager Andy Preece called him "the best centre-half in the league by far".[67] His debut came in the opening game of 2005–06, a 2–1 defeat at Kettering Town on 13 August, in which he gave an impressive performance.[68] Two games later he scored his first Worcester goal with the team's opener in a 2–1 victory over Gainsborough Trinity on 20 August, after looping the goal over goalkeeper Jamie Holmshaw.[69] Following this, he was described as Worcester's "stand-out performer in the first eight days of the campaign".[70] Smith scored in a second successive game with the team's first in a 2–2 draw with Workington on 27 August.[71] He missed Worcester's games against Droylsden and Harrogate Town with an ankle injury sustained against Workington,[72][73][74] before making his return in a 1–0 defeat by Hucknall Town on 10 September.[75] Smith scored the first goal of a 3–2 victory over Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round on 24 October.[76] He played in a 1–0 defeat by League One team Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup second round on 4 December.[77] Smith picked up an injury to his left knee during a 1–1 draw at former club Stafford on 26 December,[78][79] with the bone bruising along with a tear to the posterior cruciate.[80] He returned to full training in February 2006, and after featuring in a reserve game made his competitive return as a 79th-minute substitute in a 1–0 victory at Northwich Victoria on 11 February.[75][81][82] Smith was made captain for the final game of the season, a 3–0 victory at Worksop Town on 29 April, in which he "anchored his side expertly from the back".[83] He made 40 appearances and scored 4 goals for Worcester in 2005–06.[75]

Smith committed his future to the club over the summer and captained the side during the 2006–07 pre-season.[84][85] His first appearance of the season came in the opening game, a 1–0 victory at Barrow on 12 August,[86] before scoring his first goal of the season from inside the six-yard box with Worcester's opener in a 2–0 victory at Worksop on 22 August.[87] During August Smith started a spell of playing in central midfield after Des Lyttle moved into defence.[88] He sustained five fractures to his right hand during a 2–2 draw with Romulus in the FA Cup second qualifying round on 30 September, which meant he was forced to miss the replay.[89] He returned in the following game, a 3–2 defeat by Harrogate on 6 October.[90] However, after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season in the 90th minute of this game he was handed a one-match suspension, meaning he missed Worcester's game against Hucknall on 21 October.[91] He played in an FA Cup third qualifying round 1–1 draw with Hemel Hempstead Town on 14 October despite Preece considering dropping him to aid the recovery of his broken hand.[75][92] He signed a new one-and-a-half year contract with Worcester in December that contracted him to the club until June 2008.[93] After signing, Smith said "I think every footballer should want to play at a higher level otherwise you shouldn't be playing, but I believe I can play at a better standard with Worcester City. I feel we are good enough to move up a league."[94] Due to illness he missed Worcester's game against Leigh RMI and he made his return in a 5–2 victory at Barrow in the FA Trophy first round on 19 December.[95][96][97] Smith was handed a two-match suspension after picking up his 10th booking of the season in a 3–1 victory over Hinckley United on 20 January 2007.[98][99] This meant he missed games against Welling United and Scarborough before scoring on his return in a 3–3 draw with Vauxhall Motors on 12 February.[75][100][101] Smith scored the winning goal of a 2–1 victory over Redditch United during stoppage time on 20 February,[102] before again scoring in stoppage time with a 95th-minute header to give Worcester a 3–3 draw at Hinckley on 6 March.[103] He missed a game against Alfreton Town on 9 April in order to rest an ankle, despite playing through some previous games with this complaint.[104][105] He returned in the following game against Worksop on 14 April as a 69th-minute substitute, despite not being fully fit.[106] He completed 2006–07 with 47 appearances and 5 goals,[75] and was named Worcester's Player of the Year.[107] Throughout the season, he often deputised as captain when Lyttle was absent from the team.[108]

Smith playing for Worcester City in 2007

Smith took over as Worcester captain full-time during the 2007–08 pre-season before suffering an ankle injury in July.[108][109][110] Despite being doubtful to recover from this injury in time to play in the team's first game of the season, he started as Worcester defeated Hyde United 2–0 on 11 August.[75][109] He suffered a hamstring injury and a recurrence of the ankle injury during this game, meaning he missed Worcester's game at Hinckley on 13 August.[111][112][113] He was to be rested for the following game, a 2–1 defeat at Burscough on 18 August, but was brought on as a half-time substitute for the injured Adam Burley.[75][114] Having returned to the Worcester line-up he was forced to miss a game against Harrogate on 2 September with a mouth abscess.[115][116] Despite reports saying he would miss the game at Tamworth on 8 September, Smith started as Worcester won 2–0.[117] His first goal of the season came after heading low into the goal for Worcester's second in a 3–1 victory over Leigh RMI on 15 September.[118] After receiving his fifth yellow card of the season in a 2–1 over Stalybridge on 10 November, he missed Worcester's game at Guiseley in the FA Trophy third qualifying round on 24 November with a one-match suspension.[119] Smith was sent off for the first time as a Worcester player after being the last man when pulling back Jason Walker after he was through on goal during a 1–1 draw with Barrow on 1 December.[75][120] This resulted in a one-match suspension, meaning he missed Worcester's game against Boston on 15 December.[121] He returned in the next game, a 1–0 victory at Harrogate on 22 December,[75] and scored the winning goal in Worcester's Boxing Day game against Redditch, with his 14th-minute header being the only goal in a 1–0 victory.[122] During a 3–0 defeat by AFC Telford United on 29 December he was substituted in the 77th minute after aggravating an ankle injury during the first half by suffering ligament damage.[75][123][124]

After Telford had a bid of £1,500 and a small additional payment for Smith rejected in January 2008 Worcester manager Richard Dryden said he was determined to keep Smith at the club.[125][126] Dryden labelled the bid as "derisory" and chairman Dave Boddy said it was significantly below Worcester's valuation of Smith.[127] Despite Worcester chairman Dave Boddy saying the club had not received another bid for Smith, Telford made a second offer for the player that was "considerably more" than the first.[128][129] If this bid had been successful, Smith would have become Telford's record signing, as the eventual payment would have exceeded the £5,000 paid for Lee Moore in 2006.[130] However, Telford assistant manager Larry Chambers admitted they were unlikely to be successful in signing the player, with a 3pm deadline on 25 January set by Telford for Worcester to respond approaching.[131][132] Dryden believed the bid had been rejected by the club,[132] but a board meeting was later held to make a decision.[133] Smith's return to the team came as an 85th-minute substitute in a 1–0 victory at Southport on 26 January.[75] Worcester eventually rejected Telford's second bid of £5,000, which would have potentially risen to a figure believed to be around £7,000 based on appearances, on 31 January.[134] His first start since December 2007 came on 2 February in a 2–2 draw with Blyth Spartans, but a recurrence of his injury forced him to be substituted in the 49th minute.[75][135] After missing games against Hucknall and Nuneaton Borough he returned to training ahead of starting Worcester's 3–1 defeat at Hyde on 23 February to complete his first 90 minutes in nearly two months.[75][136][137] Smith scored the winning for Worcester in the following game, scoring from a header three minutes to give Worcester a 1–0 victory over Vauxhall Motors.[138] He suffered a back problem during a 1–0 defeat at Stalybridge and after recovering from this he served a two-match suspension, having received his 10th yellow card of the season against Stalybridge.[139][140][141] His return came in a 6–0 defeat at Blyth on 12 April before playing in the second leg of the Worcestershire Senior Cup Final against Redditch, which Worcester lost 2–0 on the day and 2–1 on aggregate.[75][142] The 2007–08 season, which Smith said was the worst of his career to date due to the injuries suffered throughout, saw him make 34 appearances and score 3 goals.[75][143]

Tamworth

Having not wanted to play in the Conference South following Worcester's re-allocation into this division, Smith signed for Conference North club Tamworth on a free transfer on 28 May.[144] Gary Mills, the Tamworth manager, had previously attempted to sign him while at Notts County and Alfreton Town.[145] He made his debut in a 1–1 draw with Droylsden on 9 August before scoring his first goal for the club in a 2–1 victory at King's Lynn on 21 October,[146] opening the scoring after the ball fell to him from a corner kick in a crowded penalty area.[147] This was followed by a second goal in four league games, scoring Tamworth's first goal in a 2–2 draw at Stalybridge on 8 November, after which he said "I hadn't looked like scoring earlier in the season but now I've hit a purple patch".[146][148] An undiagnosed groin problem saw Smith miss Tamworth's game against Hinckley on 26 December, although he returned for the following game, a 5–1 defeat at Gateshead on 11 January 2009.[146][149] He was forced into a late withdrawal from Tamworth's game against Burton Albion in the Birmingham Senior Cup on 13 January after his groin problem reappeared during the warm-up.[150][151] His return to the team came on 24 January in a 2–1 victory at Hyde, during which he conceded a penalty kick after fouling Chris Simm.[146][152] Smith missed Tamworth's games against Gainsborough and Solihull Moors through illness, and he returned for a 1–1 draw with Southport on 3 March.[146][153] Smith finished 2008–09 with Tamworth winning the Conference North title, thus earning promotion to the Conference Premier.[154] He was named the club's Players' Player of the Season, having made 42 appearances and scored two goals in the process.[146][154] Following the confirmation of Tamworth's title victory, he said "We deserved to win the league though – from day one really – and full credit to the lads because they have all been superb".[145]

Smith verbally agreed a new one-year contract with the club in May,[155] which he signed in June.[156] Following Martin Foster's departure he was handed the Tamworth captaincy during the 2009–10 pre-season, which he described as a "massive honour".[157][158] His first appearance of the season came in the opening game, a 1–1 draw at Stevenage Borough on 8 August.[159] Smith's first goal of the season came after scoring Tamworth's opener with a powerful header in a 2–1 victory over Wrexham on 25 August.[160] In October he paid tribute to the defensive partnership he had struck up with Michael Briscoe, saying "Football is about partnerships on the pitch, having trust in team-mates and good understandings and we seem to have one."[161] He suffered a heel injury in October, while also having a hernia problem that possibly needed an operation.[162] The first game he sat out through injury was against former club York, after which he said "York City was the first fixture that I looked for at the start of the season. So it was hard to watch from a personal point of view."[163] He eventually underwent a hernia operation, meaning he was ruled out for a long-term period.[164] Despite not being match fit, he made the bench for a 2–0 defeat by Hayes & Yeading United on 31 October.[165] His return came two weeks later in the following game, a 3–1 victory over Chester City on 14 November, in which "he stepped back into the side to produce a fine performance at the heart of the defence".[166][167] He was handed a one-match suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in a 0–0 draw with Forest Green Rovers on 28 December,[168] meaning he missed Tamworth's game against Oxford United on 16 January 2010.[169] His return came in a 0–0 draw at Gainsborough in the FA Trophy second round on 19 January.[159] Smith scored the only goal against league leaders Stevenage on 6 February, with his close range finish in the 23rd minute giving Tamworth a 1–0 victory.[170] He was rested for the league game against Salisbury on 16 February ahead of the FA Trophy quarter-final against the same opposition, a game Smith started as Tamworth were knocked out of the competition following a 2–1 defeat on 20 February.[159][171] After being handed a yellow card in a 1–0 defeat at Histon on 9 March he was given a two-match suspension,[172] making his return to the team in a 2–0 defeat at Cambridge on 24 March.[173] He scored from close range in the 82nd minute for Tamworth's equalising goal in his first game against York since leaving the club, which finished a 1–1 draw on 27 March.[174] Following the game he was suffering from a knee problem but was available for a 1–1 draw at Luton Town on 10 April.[159][175] He missed a game against AFC Wimbledon on 20 April due to illness,[176] but returned for the final game of the season, a 4–3 defeat by Ebbsfleet United.[159] Smith made 38 appearances and scored 4 goals in 2009–10.[159]

Mansfield Town

Having been disappointed by the new contract offered to him by Tamworth he agreed on 25 May to a free transfer to fellow Conference Premier team Mansfield Town on a one-year contract on 1 July.[177][178] He made his debut in a 3–1 victory over Forest Green on 14 August, the opening day of 2010–11, and his first goal came from a close range header to open the scoring for Mansfield as they beat Eastbourne Borough 4–0 on 25 September.[179][180] He was Mansfield's stand-in captain for a 1–1 draw at Gateshead on 2 October.[181] However, after Mansfield signed defenders Rhys Day and Simon Grand, Smith became surplus to requirements and was made available on loan.[182][183]

Return to York City

Following Mills' appointment as manager at York City Smith signed for his former club, by this time still playing in the Conference Premier, on a three-month loan on 21 October with a view to a permanent transfer.[184] The move came after making 15 appearances and scoring one goal for Mansfield up to that point in 2010–11.[185] He was immediately installed as captain on his return and made his second debut as a York player in a 2–0 victory at Kidderminster in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round on 23 October.[185][186] After receiving his fifth yellow card of the season in a 0–0 draw at League Two side Rotherham United in the FA Cup first round he was handed a one-match suspension.[187] Smith's first goal for York came from a header to score the opener in a 3–0 victory against Rotherham in the replay on 17 November,[188] but illness resulted in him missing York's 0–0 draw at Kidderminster on 30 November.[189]

He signed for the club permanently on 5 January 2011 on a one-and-a-half-year contract that would expire in June 2012.[190] His first appearance after making the move permanent was in a 2–0 defeat at Premier League team Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup third round on 8 January,[191] which was the first time Smith had faced top-flight opposition in his career.[192] After goalkeeper Michael Ingham's 15th minute sending off away at Luton on 18 January Smith played in goal up until half time, conceding four goals in a 5–0 defeat.[193] He was handed a two-match suspension after picking up his 10th booking of the season in a 2–1 victory over Mansfield on 15 March, meaning he missed York’s games against Cambridge and Histon.[194] His return to the team came in a 1–1 draw at Kettering on 2 April.[195] Smith was forced to miss York's games against Darlington and Cambridge in April due to worries involving the birth of his son.[196][197] He finished the season with 30 appearances and one goal for York.[185]

Smith's 2011–12 season kicked-off after starting York's opening game, a 2–1 victory over Ebbsfleet on 13 August.[198] During York's seventh league game of the season, a 2–1 defeat away at Tamworth on 10 September, he conceded the opposition's two successfully converted penalties.[199] He was dropped from the starting line-up for the subsequent game against Bath City on 13 September,[200] with Jamal Fyfield taking his place in central defence.[201] Smith remained out of the line-up until he started a 2–1 victory away at Stockport on 1 October,[202] being favoured over Danny Parslow as the replacement for the suspended David McGurk.[203] He retained his place in the team for the following game, a 6–2 home victory over Braintree Town on 8 October, despite McGurk returning from suspension.[204][205] Smith remained in the York team up until an FA Cup fourth qualifying round game away at Wrexham on 29 October, when he and a number of other players were left out of the starting line-up,[206] but was re-installed to the team for the league game against Wrexham on 5 November.[198]

After making a mistake that led to York conceding a goal late on in a 1–1 draw away at Forest Green on 26 November,[207] he was replaced in the line-up by McGurk in the next game at home to Lincoln on 29 November.[208] This was the start of a second extended spell out of the team for Smith that season, before returning to play as a defensive midfielder in a 3–5–2 formation for York's FA Trophy first round replay away at Solihull on 13 December.[198][209] He netted his first goal of the season after he opened the scoring in the 11th minute after converting Scott Kerr's cross at the far post, with York going on to win 3–0.[198] However, he returned to the bench for the subsequent league game against Kidderminster on 19 December, with York reverting to their usual 4–3–3 formation.[209] With York reverting to 3–5–2 for a 1–1 draw away at Mansfield on 26 December Smith returned as a defensive midfielder,[210] but after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season he was suspended for the reverse fixture at home to Mansfield on 1 January 2012.[211] Smith captained York to victory in the 2012 FA Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium on 12 May, with Newport County being beaten 2–0.[198] Eight days later he captained York to a 2–1 victory over Luton in the 2012 Conference Premier play-off Final at Wembley, meaning the club returned to the Football League after an eight-year absence with promotion to League Two.[198]

Smith started York's game away at Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup first round in the opening game of 2012–13 on 11 August 2012, which the side lost 4–2 in a penalty shoot-out following a 1–1 draw after extra time.[212] He then played in York's first Football League fixture since their promotion, a 3–1 defeat at home to Wycombe Wanderers on 18 August 2012.[213] His first goal of the season came three days later with a header to make the score away at Morecambe 1–1, with York eventually going on to draw the match 2–2.[212][214] Smith scored York's goal in a 1–0 win away to Dagenham & Redbridge on 27 April 2013, as York avoided relegation on the final day of the season.[212] He finished the season with 50 appearances and 4 goals and signed a new one-year contract with York in May 2013.[212][215] Smith left York by mutual consent on 28 January 2014 to pursue first team football.[216]

FC Halifax Town

He signed for FC Halifax Town of the Conference Premier on a short-term contract on 23 February 2014.[217][218] His debut came as a 70th-minute substitute for Adam Smith in a 2–0 home win over Tamworth on 1 March 2014.[219] Smith's first start for Halifax did not come until 5 April 2014, in which he scored an 85th-minute winner in a 1–0 away win over Nuneaton Town with a header from a corner.[220] He remained in the starting line-up for the remainder of 2013–14, and played in both play-off semi-final games against Cambridge, in which Halifax were eliminated 2–1 on aggregate.[219]

Alfreton Town

Smith signed for Conference Premier team Alfreton Town on a one-year contract on 11 July 2014.[221] He made his debut in a 3–1 home defeat to Woking on the opening day of 2014–15 on 9 August 2014.[219] Having not played regularly for Alfreton, Smith returned to Tamworth on loan for the rest of the season on 6 March 2015.[219][222][223] He made his second debut for Tamworth in their 6–0 away defeat Chorley in the Conference North on 28 March 2015, and finished the loan spell with five appearances.[219] Smith was not retained by Alfreton for 2015–16,[224] having made nine appearances[219] as they were relegated with a 21st-place in the Conference Premier.[225]

Style of play

Smith primarily plays as a centre-back.[226] He has been praised for his organisational skills and communication.[186] He has been recognised for his goalscoring ability for a defender, being described as "often a predator in the opposition's penalty box".[227] He has also had spells playing at right back and in defensive midfield; in the latter role "every attribute he has is geared to that job", said Worcester assistant manager Andy Morrison in 2006.[228][229] He was described in 2003 as being "cool on the ball, quick in the tackle and strong in the air".[41] After signing for Worcester in 2005, manager Andy Preece rated him as "good on the ball, aggressive in the air, got a lot of pace and reads the game very well".[230] He was recognised as a "calm and assured presence in defence that breeds confidence throughout the team" in 2007.[231] At Tamworth he established himself as "a tough, uncompromising player with a winning mentality" and these qualities led to Mansfield manager David Holdsworth signing him in 2010.[232]

Personal life

Smith and York teammate Neville Stamp were assaulted by a gang in an unprovoked attack while on a night out in York in August 2001, and after suffering concussion he was admitted to York District Hospital.[233] As part of a scheme by York City for forging links with local primary schools, he was involved with Lord Deramore's Primary School.[234]

As of 2010, Smith lives in Derbyshire with girlfriend Chantelle.[3] While playing as a semi-professional for Stafford, Worcester and Tamworth he combined playing with a plastering career, which he gave up after resuming his professional career with Mansfield.[235]
