Chris Goulding (born 24 October 1988) is an Australian professional basketball player who currently plays for Melbourne United of the National Basketball League (NBL). He has also previously played in the Queensland Basketball League for the Brisbane Spartans, Northside Wizards and Gladstone Port City Power.
Early life
Goulding was born and raised in Launceston, Tasmania but moved to Queensland as a youth and attended Brisbane State High School.
Professional career
NBL
Goulding started his NBL career as a development player with the Brisbane Bullets for the 2006–07 NBL season. He managed just one game in his first season. He was with the Bullets until the club folded at the end of the 2007–08 NBL season. In 2008, he joined the Perth Wildcats for the 2008–09 NBL season.
In June 2009, Goulding signed with the Gold Coast Blaze and re-united with his coach at the Bullets, Joey Wright.[1] In 2010, he played for the Fleet team in the Foot Locker Elite Classic – High Stakes Hoops.
In August 2012, following the Gold Coast Blaze's decision to withdraw from the NBL due to finical constraints, Goulding signed with the Melbourne Tigers for the 2012–13 season.[2] In the 2012 NBL All-Star Game held at the Adelaide Arena on 22 December 2012, Goulding was the top scorer with 24 points. He also had 5 rebounds and 4 assists on his way to winning the game's MVP award.[3]
On 19 April 2013, Goulding re-signed with the Tigers on a two-year deal.[4]
In July 2013, Goulding joined the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2013 NBA Summer League.[5]
On 9 March 2014, Goulding recorded a career-high 50 points, as he played the entire 40 minutes of the Tigers' 92–82 win over the Sydney Kings. It was the NBL's first individual 50-point game since reverting to 40-minute games.[6] He went on to win the 2014 scoring title, with an average of 23.0 points per game, edging out Sydney Kings import Sam Young by 1.1 points.[7]
In July 2014, Goulding joined the Dallas Mavericks for the 2014 NBA Summer League.[8][9]
Spain
On 22 July 2014, Goulding signed a one-year deal with CAI Zaragoza of the Liga ACB.[10] In 33 league games for Zaragoza, he averaged 8.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.
Return to NBL
On 30 June 2015, Goulding signed a one-year deal with Melbourne United.[11] On 9 November 2015, Goulding was involved in a contentious collision with Corey Webster of the New Zealand Breakers, with an unsportsmanlike foul being called on Webster for a push on Goulding that many received as a "flop" by Goulding. The resulting free throws to Goulding tied the game with just over nine seconds remaining, with United going on to win 87–86. The result was not received well by the basketball community or the Breakers, with Breakers head coach Dean Vickerman even calling for the game to be replayed.[12][13] The NBL later determined the unsportsmanlike foul should never have been awarded and formally apologised to the Breakers for the what the Breakers felt was an unjust call and robbed them of the win.[14]
