Cathy Engelbert

Catherine "Cathy" Engelbert is an American business executive.

In February 2015, she was named Chief Executive Officer of audit and accounting firm Deloitte LLP, the United States member of Deloitte, effective March 2015. The selection makes her the first female U.S. CEO of a Big Four firm. News media outlets including The Wall Street Journal highlighted Engelbert's appointment as cracking the "glass ceiling."[1]

Personal life and education

Engelbert grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey with seven brothers and sisters and attended Collingswood High School.[2] She graduated from Lehigh University in 1986 with a degree in accounting, where she played basketball and lacrosse.[3] She is a mother of two and lives in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.[1][4]

Career

After joining Deloitte in 1986, Engelbert has spent her entire career with the company. In an interview, she credited the company's early focus on supporting women in the workplace as being important for her career:

In the early ’90s, I worked at our national office. Mike Cook was our Chairman and CEO, and Deloitte became the first professional services organization to launch a women’s initiative. It was a key transition for my career because Mike had daughters and he was sensitive to women having the same opportunities as men. Being part of Mike’s team back then helped me to see the opportunities that Deloitte was trying to give both men and women, and the focus on making sure we had an appropriate number of women at senior levels. At the time, recruitment of those coming out of colleges was 50/50, but the percentage of women in our leadership ranks was still only in the single digits. We have made significant progress at Deloitte since then as a result of leaders at the organization who have recognized the importance of investing in all of our people.[5]

Prior to being appointed CEO of Deloitte LLP in March 2015, she was the chairman and CEO of the audit subsidiary, Deloitte & Touche LLP.[1][3]
