Pianisi Castle (Italian: Castello di Pianisi) is a medieval castle located near the village of Sant'Elia a Pianisi in the Province of Campobasso in the Italian region Molise, located about 20 kilometres (12 mi) northeast of Campobasso. It was built in the 10th century. It is now an new archaeological site open in 2015.

History

The Castle of Pianisi, was built on a hill near the river Fortore. It features a special construction with stones.

The first castle fortification seem to be associated with the coming of the Normans in the 10th century, around the area of the fire. His history passed through the property of the feudal lords of the castle, among them the French knight Jean de Nanteuil, already Lord of Sparta and Laconia, who in 1269 received the castle for his military success directly from his relative King Charles I of Anjou, which arrived in Sicily.[1] Later renovated and enlarged.

The Church of St. Peter, show a wall painting of knight who goes to a winged monster, the painting dates from the late fourteenth and for that reason is identified with the knight Jean de Nanteuil.
