The first season of Canada's Got Talent, a reality television series, premièred on March 4, 2012, and ended on May 14, 2012, on City.[1] Unlike America's Got Talent, the show only had the audition round, top 37, semi-finals, and then the finale. The premiere episode, which aired March 4, 2012, took in a viewership of 2 million on average throughout the night, a record for Citytv.
Auditions
Preliminary Auditions
Canada's Got Talent travelled to six different cities across the country for the producer auditions: Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Halifax during the months of September and October 2011.[1]
After the final auditions were completed in Halifax, the show then travelled to Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, Halifax and Montreal for the live-audience auditions which were taped in October, November, December 2011 and January 2012.[2]
A total of 244 acts were given a "yes" during the auditions. A total of 108 auditions were aired on television (both eliminated acts and successful acts).[3]

Youtube auditions
During December 2011, numerous people auditioned for Canada's Got Talent over YouTube. Canadians were able to vote on the top 20 videos for about 2 weeks. The person who received the most votes was revealed on Tuesday April 3, 2012, and joined the competition. Also, the judges chose one out of two people that received the second and third highest amount of votes to also join the competition.[11] Caitlin Bell received the most votes while Mathew Cathcart "The Emsee" was chosen by the judges to join the competition.[12]
Judges Round
Those that were accepted past the audition round moved on to the Judges Round (also known as "The Cutdown"). This stage of the competition did not feature any audiences and only contained contestants walking up to the judges or Dina (host) to find out if they made it to the next round. Originally, out of all that made it to this point, thirty-six (36) acts were to make it through to the next round which would be the semi-finals but because the judges "broke a rule" the final number of semi-finalists were thirty-seven (37). During the episode, it was announced that 244 acts were given a "yes" during the auditions meaning that 207 were eliminated (some of these auditions were not shown on television).[3][11][13]
Below is the list of thirty-seven (37) semi-finalists in no set order. Note that some of the acts below may have not been aired on television.

Semi-finals
At this point in the competition, the selected thirty-seven acts will perform in front of an audience and the judges. The semi-finals will contain six or seven acts per week for six weeks with the day after being the results show. Each week, out of the acts that perform, only two will make it to the finals. To determine who moves to the finals, viewer's at home will select one act and the judges will select the other.[15]
Broadcasting
Because of the various time zones in Canada, only viewers in the provinces and territories east of Manitoba see the show live (in the Newfoundland, Atlantic and Eastern time zones). All other areas in Canada are taped and even though the show does mention the show is live, it is not. All Citytv stations air the show at 8:00 pm (in each time zone where there is a CityTV station) with the Toronto station being the first CityTV station to reach 8:00 pm. So viewers in Newfoundland see the show live at 9:30 pm and viewers in the Atlantic at 9:00 pm because there is no CityTV station in these provinces to broadcast the show at local time. The same process occurs with the results show. Also, the semi-finals are filmed at Showline Studios in Toronto.

Wushu By Storm |
Mixed Martial Artists - Wushu By Storm performed with the theme if it being: males vs girls with the girls dominating the fight.
Judges' Responses: All 3 judges were impressed with the act. Measha thought that many Canadians will vote for the act and make it to the finals. |
2 |
H.I.X. |
Beat Boxing Group - H.I.X performed with the theme of it being: "going back to the future". The group beat boxed about certain events that occurred in the decades that were chosen. At the end of the performance, the beginning of it was repeated. Stephan was the only judge to buzz for this act.
Judges' Responses: Stephan mentioned that he was bored of the act 20 seconds into it (which is the reason why he buzzed) but thought that each individual in the group was great, the performance just didn't reach "semi-final standards". Measha agreed with Stephan and said similar comments. Martin said that the story-line was hard to follow and found that that the act wasn't quite original. |
3 |
Pulp City Inn |
Rock Band - Pulp City Inn performed one of their original songs, My Surrender.
Judges' Responses: For this act, Stephan felt that the act was neither good or bad comparing to the groups audition. Measha believed that everything in the act was perfect but if the act were to move on, they would need to bring the excitement of the song at the beginning rather than the end. Martin enjoyed the performance and sang a small part of the song that Pulp City Inn had just performed. |
4 |
Marissa Puff |
Fire Dancer - Marissa Puff performed a series of fire tricks. Both Stephan and Martin buzzed for this act.
Judges' Responses: Martin's response to this act was that Marissa didn't "step up" from her audition and didn't feel like it had a "wow" factor to it. Stephan, on the other hand, said that the act was better than her audition performance but still agreed with Martin about the act not having the "wow" factor. Measha enjoyed the performance but she didn't believe that the type of act had enough potential to win the competition. |
5 |
Christopher Charles |
Singer - Christopher Charles performed a Bob Marley song for Canada.
Judges' Responses: Measha was impressed with the performance and gave positive feedback. Martin mentioned that the song choice wasn't the best but still enjoyed it. Stephan agreed that the choice of song could have been better and it was a risk that Christopher took. |
6 |
Freshh |
Boys Dance Group - This group danced to a number of different songs throughout the performance.
Judges' Responses: Martin was extremely impressed by the act and was "blown away". Stephan told the group that if they did another performance that was as great as this one, they could have a chance of winning the competition. Measha gave positive feedback to the group and mentioned that the performance should be intense from beginning to end. |
7 |
Julie Lafontaine |
Opera Singer - Julie Lafontaine performed what she does best, opera.
Judges' Responses: Martin really loved Julie's background story and performance. Stephan said similar comments to Martin. Measha told Julie to maybe expand on the performance if she moved on to the finals but generally provided positive feedback. |

1 |
Scott Jackson |
Beatboxer - Scott performed a beatboxing skit with 6 silver dancers dancing to what he was saying.
Judges' Responses: Martin loved the performance and thought that Scott didn't need the dancers during the performance. Stephan also enjoyed the performance. Measha thought that the performance was fantastic and also mentioned that one of the silver dancers made a mistake during the performance. |
2 |
Daddy Cool |
Dance Group - Performance was about prisoners escaping Alcatraz. At the same time, the group danced to many different songs.
Judges' Responses: Stefan thought that the group tried perfect the performance too much (during their audition, it wasn't as "perfect") and therefore, the lack of perfection is apparently what makes Canada love Daddy Cool. Measha agreed with Stephan and didn't enjoy the performance as much as their audition. Martin thought that the group doesn't have enough talent (comparing to the other contestants) to win the competition. |
3 |
Roger LeBlanc |
Actor - Roger performed the St. Crispin's Day Speech from William Shakespeare's Henry V.
Judges' Responses: Measha thought that the performance was good and touching. Martin thought that choosing another Shakespeare play would be a mistake but in the end, it wasn't. Stephan said that all the acts in the competition are going "one way" while Roger went the "other way" and stood out from the previous acts. |
4 |
Angry Candy |
Band - Angry Candy performed the song "Alone" for their performance.
Judges' Responses: Martin wasn't as excited as he was with the groups audition and thought that it wasn't the best. Stephan thought that the song choice played a role in the outcome and also mentioned that the performance could have been better. Measha liked the performance and liked the song choice but said that the fact that the group was spread out around the stage played a role in how the entire group felt about how to perform (because Angry Candy is used to only performing in small bars and other small venues). |
5 |
Yuval Fichman |
Piano - Yuval performed a classic song on a grand piano.
Judges' Responses: Measha said that Yuval's playing was incredible and that he's the real deal, although she noted a few flips that, she added, nobody else would ever notice (until she mentioned it). Martin also enjoyed the performance, but the song choice wasn't the best. As well, he said that he would kill to see Yuval on TV every day at three pm. Stephan said Yuval is absolutely talented and charming, but he is not sure if Canada's Got Talent is the right avenue to bring a pianist to light. |
6 |
Vithou Thurber-Promtep |
Singer - Vithou sang "Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars with his guitar.
Judges' Responses: Measha liked the song choice and also liked the performance. Martin agreed with Measha. Stephan related Vithou with Justin Bieber and also like the performance. |
7 |
Fantasy Circus |
Circus - This time, the entire family of Fantasy Circus was involved with the act but performed a similar stunt to what was done during their audition. This time, one of the member balanced on circular objects instead of flat objects. The stunt was completed successfully and confetti guns went off at the end of the performance.
Judges' Responses: Martin noticed that there wasn't much of a difference from their original audition and therefore, wasn't blown away this time around. Stephan enjoyed the performance but also noticed what Martin did about the act being the same. Measha thought that the way the performance led up to the final stunt kept everyone interested and also enjoyed it. |

Craz E Crew Stunt Team |
BMX and Rollerblading Stunts - Perform with the theme of "cops vs punks"
Judges' Responses: Stephan Moccio was very surprised by how well they performed, said "he didn't expect them to be THIS good." Measha was very "edge-of-her-seat" and hoped the audience would vote for them. And Martin was about the same, said it was exciting and "Vegas material." |
2 |
Jonah Berens |
Singer - Sang "Replay"
Judges' Responses: Martin said that he thinks it's exhilarating to watch him, to see if he will hit the high notes, and just overall a good performance. Measha said that he was much better, had a much stronger voice than his audition, and overall a great performance (even though she hated the song choice). Moccio had a soft-spot for him,, and that emotionally/emotively, he is even better/more exciting to watch than Julie Lafontaine. Otherwise, he agrees with Measha about the song choice. |
3 |
Nathan Knowles |
Contortionist - Impressive combination of contortion and aerial acrobatics.
Judges' Responses: Martin felt that the routine was a little lacklustre, but that he is still great at what he does. Moccio agreed slightly that "he was always waiting for something more, all set up and little action." Measha thought that it was great to see a masculine take on a usually feminine act. |
4 |
Brat Pack |
Dance Crew - Danced to a variety of songs, seemed to travel between eras of song and dance.
Judges' Responses: Moccio thought they were better than Freshh in the auditions, however he thought maybe that Freshh had more energy in the semi-final auditions and was curious to see how Canada voted. Measha was extremely impressed (gave a standing ovation), saying that the precision, choreography and story are all top-notch and that they have more personality than Freshh. Martin was just overall impressed and didn't understand what Moccio was talking about when he thought that the "props were distracting." |
5 |
One Blood |
Barbershop/A cappella group - Sang a very interesting rendition of Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers
Judges' Responses: Measha was torn between whether she liked them or not, but said that they are talented as far as technique goes. Moccio said he was going to buzz, but then mentioned that they were good and pleasant to watch, but didn't think he would pay $50 to see them. Martin said that though they have talent, it was a poor choice of song and therefore can't make it to the end with that kind of performance. |
6 |
Caitlin Bell[note 1] |
Singer - Sang Hold It Against Me by Britney Spears
Judges' Responses: Martin thought she sounded beautiful and pleasant to watch and listen to. Moccio thought that it was a good performance but maybe she should have done an original song, and that he might not have even put that through on national auditions, citing that YouTube might be a place that harbours more intimate performances better than on stage. Measha buzzed, citing that the song choice was boring and that her voice wasn't that impressive, also saying that YouTube isn't a forum that allows for great talent to be found easily, to the chagring of the audience. |
7 |
Shale Wagman |
Dancer - Danced to The Scientist by Coldplay
Judges' Responses: Moccio said that it was just an amazing performance - effortless and beautiful. Measha was speechless and holding back tears about how beautiful and amazing he is. Martin agreed with both of them. |

Judges' Responses: Stephan found the act very exciting. Measha enjoyed the act and said she could see this type of act in Las Vegas. Martin also enjoyed the act but found it a bit repetitive. |

Production
On May 30, 2011, Citytv and Insight Production announced that they would create a Canadian series of the hit Got Talent series and that the show would begin in Spring 2012.[28]
The stage for Canada's Got Talent is almost exactly the same used on Britain's Got Talent; the only difference being that the stage isn't full of moving LED lights in Canada.
On October 13, 2011, it was announced that Martin Short would become one of three judges for the show.[29] Four days later, Stephan Moccio and Measha Brueggergosman were confirmed to be the other two judges for the show. On the same day, Dina Pugliese was also announced to be the host for Canada's Got Talent.[30]
