The Calcutta Institute of Engineering and Management (CIEM) is a Semi Government Institution in Tollygunge, Kolkata, West Bengal, India and is considered as one of the Best institutions in West Bengal. The Institute was founded in 2003 with an aim to develop a center for excellence, by eminent educationalists, social workers and the Government of West Bengal.[1] It is located in the heart of Kolkata, Kudghat, which is a part of the prime city Tollygunge. The college is about 500 meters away from Kudghat (Netaji) metro station.

Campus

The institute, with 5.08 acres (20,600 m2) of land, has lecture rooms, one seminar room, around 50 computer terminals inside computer labs, a library, along with other essential amenities as cafeteria, common-room for playing carrom and table-tennis and one small play ground. The Campus is Named as "Prasanta Sur Campus".[2]

To impart high quality technical education with efforts to instill strong human values, entrepreneurial skills, research capability, effective communication skills and problem solving abilities to face the contemporary world with solutions for its crisis or problems.

Facilities

Computing and Internet

The computer resource centre is equipped with computing resources and facilities both in the form of best hardware and supportive software which are maintained and updated with precision. The cyber centre, which boasts of a number of computers, as high as a hundred, all of Pentium 4 configuration and networked with high speed LAN to serve a host of applications. These workstations are connected to the internet via central browser to facilitate free flow of information. The centre has the latest software and multimedia packages, MIS systems and internet facilities. The platforms and application software has been configured to research and industrial specific requirements.

Quiz and Debate Club

The Institute boosts co-curricular awareness among its students by developing Science Quiz Clubs and Debate Clubs, which have succeeded in evoking enthusiastic response from the students. The participation of the club members in Science fairs, exhibitions and various debate competitions have brought laurels and added feathers to the dignity of the college.

Financial aid

Aid is available, with ten per cent of students given a full waiver of fees, and another ten per cent have half the fees waived. This is arranged on a merit basis, in accordance with the regulations of the Government of West Bengal Higher Education Department.

Finishing School

The Institute has been incessantly guiding its students for personality development through grooming sessions and seminars, which would help them in their placement and managerial fields. Of late, the institute has developed a well equipped “Finishing School” for its students which would hone up their personality and would and would train them for the outside corporate world awaiting their entrance. The Finishing School conducts seminars and other activities like group discussions, mock personal interviews, jamming sessions etc. on Mondays, besides weekly classes for each individual streams.

Library

The library of C.I.E.M. is one of its kinds in the city which spans over a huge carpet area, as large as 545 sq. m and boasts of its huge number and variety of titles in the racks. A count of books which goes well above 15 thousand, the library provides a complete and comprehensive resource to quench the thirst of knowledge of the students. About three thousand titles are there in the racks, which are constantly being updated, and maintained up-to-date with professional precision. New titles are constantly added on, which means each time you visit; there is more to know than before.

The library also maintains about 28 journals, which helps the budding engineers to get them acquainted with the present situations in technology, literature, sports and politics. As handling of such huge resources is by no means easy manually, C.I.E.M. library is moving towards automation and the progress is steady. The library is well equipped with the college edition of the LIBSYS software, computerized circulation system, OPAC, Internet Facility and Library networking facility which makes the process of issue smooth and supple.

Laboratory

The Institute envelopes modern and state-of-the-art laboratories for all the engineering streams. The laboratories are set up as per AICTE norms and guidelines which have the latest generation computers for each student with relevant system software and application software.

first year: physics lab, basic electrical lab, basic electronics lab, workshop, graphics lab

second year: circuit and network lab, dbms lab, electronics measurement and instrumentation lab, computer architecture lab, control system lab, analog electric circuit lab, digital electronics and integrated circuit lab, communication lab, thermal power lab, electrical machine shop, language lab, sensors and transducers lab

third year: operating system lab, microprocessor and microcontroller lab, propagation and antenna lab, audio & video engineering lab, power system lab, power electronics lab, industrial instrumentation lab, electrical machine shop, multimedia lab, senior level communication lab, engineering lab/microwave, electronic design lab, artificial intelligence & web tech lab

fourth year: vlsi & dsp lab, electrical drives lab, project lab (internet), computer lab-7 (ai &web tech)

Health Care

Doctors visit to CIEM Campus on regular basis and are available for the whole day. Employees and Students are given a substantial amount of discount for various pathological and clinical tests done from Medinova Diagnostics.

A first aid centre and a sick room is henceforth maintained and well-equipped to counter any situation whatsoever. Even then, from the 2008-09 sessions, an entirely free medical check up facility has been introduced for the students at the time of admission. All these comprehensively ensure that a student should be free in body, mind, heart and soul to engage himself in his academic and extra-curricular activities.

Recreation

After the several hectic hours of studies, the budding engineers need some recreation to refresh their mindset. The institute provides the students sufficient infrastructure to rejuvenate their potentials.The institute has a well maintained playground and a volleyball court. There is a common room furnished with Table Tennis boards and carom boards. All these together envelopes the mode of extra-curricular activities in which the students peddle their talents at. Besides there is a warm and cozy canteen which serves as a haven for exchange of ideas among various crust of students.
