CKDG-FM is a radio station located in Montreal, Quebec. Owned and operated by Canadian Hellenic Cable Radio (CHCR), it broadcasts on 105.1 MHz using a directional antenna with an average effective radiated power of 141 watts and a peak effective radiated power of 224 watts (class A). Unlike most FM stations, it broadcasts in mono to maximize its Signal to Noise Ratio to all its listeners. CKDG's studios are located on Avenue du Parc in Montreal.
CKDG-FM broadcasts multicultural programming, primarily in Greek, alongside programming in Armenian, Hungarian, Italian, Romanian and Ukrainian. Per its license, CKDG-FM is forbidden to use English or French for more than 35% of its broadcast schedule.
History
The station was previously known as CHCR when it was on closed circuit cable for decades, before moving to full-fledged FM in early 2004. The station received CRTC approval in 2003 to operate a new ethnic FM radio station in Montreal.[1]
On May 13, 2010, the station applied to the CRTC to move from 105.1 to 106.7 MHz, a frequency previously used by a local Aboriginal Voices (AVR) repeater; the station would be second adjacent from its sister station, CKIN-FM, at 106.3 MHz;[2] it was the decision regarding CKIN-FM that led to the closedown of the local AVR repeater in 2009.[3] As of January 2012, the CRTC has yet to issue a decision regarding the move to 106.7, despite another broadcaster, Evanov Communications, filing an application for a new station at 106.7 serving the western suburb of Hudson, which would pose interference problems if both stations are active on the same frequency;[4][5] however, on February 6, 2012, CKDG notified the CRTC that they had withdrawn its application for the frequency change, though it was unknown whether or not Evanov's application for the new station had to do with its decision.[6][7]
Mike FM
In May 2005, CKDG-FM began to broadcast English-language music programming during the drive time hours with an adult hits format branded as 105.1 Mike FM. Under the Mike FM banner, it also has separate music broadcast sections in Greek and Italian.
