The CASA C-295 Persuader is a twin-turboprop maritime patrol aircraft. It was developed by EADS CASA based on the CASA C-295. The aircraft has been acquired by the Portuguese Air Force, the Chilean Navy, and the Royal Air Force of Oman.
Design
The C-295 Persuader is a twin-engine turboprop-powered maritime patrol aircraft; Airbus has promoted the type to perform various special mission tasks, including conducting long range search and rescue, the protection of exclusive economic zones, use by paratroopers and special forces, and supporting humanitarian aid operations. Missions systems are palletised, allowing for various configurations to suit mission profiles, such as extending the aircraft's range or increasing cargo capacity via their removal; the C-295 can be aerial refuelled for increased range as well. As of September 2015, three different maritime search radars have been integrated on the C-295 Persuader.[1]
Variants
The C-295 Persuader receive different designations depending on the type of missions that they perform.
- C-295 MSA / MPA (Maritime Surveillance Aircraft / Maritime Patrol Aircraft, C-295 equipped with FITS system for maritime patrol.
- C-295 ASW / ASuW (Anti-Submarine Warfare / Anti-Surface Warfare ). C-295 equipped with the FITS system, weapon system in six underwing stations and self-protection equipment that had been selected by the Navy of the United Arab Emirates as aircraft ASW for Shaheen I program, but ultimately was not purchased. Bought instead by the Chilean Navy, two units are equipped with a magnetic anomaly detector.
Operators
The version of marine patrol the C-295 has been gained so far by three customers, with a total of 11 aircraft.
- The Chilean Navy acquired three C-295 Persuader aircraft, two of them with anti-submarine capability (MPA / ASW) in November 2007 to replace their old P-3A Orion for $105 million. This acquisition is part of Chile's "Alcatraz" project, and also includes an option to purchase 5 more C-295 aircraft to replace its Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante, Embraer EMB-111 Bandeirulha and Lockheed Orion P-3A aircraft. with the idea Initial reaching have a fleet of four C-295 anti-submarine, three maritime patrol and one cargo. However, although even in May 2009 it was announced that the Chilean Government was about to sign an order implementing three of those options for $95 million, a review of plans in mid that year led to not run such options and instead proceed to update the P-3, modernization may include the installation of the FITS system that equip the C-295. However, problems in this modernization could cause a return to the initial plans. The first aircraft arrived in Chile the April 24, 2010, to the Naval Air Station Vina del Mar, the official presentation took place 6 days later at the base.
- The Royal Air Force of Oman signed an order for three aircraft C-295 maritime patrol aircraft on 19 May 2012.
- The Portuguese Air Force has acquired 5 C-295MPA Persuader aircraft, which will replace the old CASA C-212 AVIOCAR. Besides these, they have also acquired 7 C-295 military transport aircraft. EADS CASA delivered the first C-295 aircraft to the Portuguese authorities in November 2008. The remaining C-295 were delivered at a rate of one aircraft every month and a half, until the total of 12 units. In principle, transport planes and then the C-295 Persuader maritime surveillance will be provided. The price of this acquisition is estimated of around 350 million euros. In addition to the standard equipment of the Persuader, there is also a powerful beacon in a pod under the left wing.
Potential Exports
In late 2008 the Hellenic Air Force announced plans to acquire five aircraft to replace its 4 Lockheed P-3B Orion aircraft. The Persuader is being considered along with the ATR-72MP, Be-200, and P-99.[2]
Failed Bids
The Algerian Air Force signed a contract for four C-295 Persuader, along with 6 C-295M's for about 150 million euros in 2004. However, Persuader acquisition failed to materialize.
The UAE , meanwhile, he was selected and planned to acquire 4 copies by €156.2 million in the year 2001. However, they have not confirmed the order and instead have acquired two Dash-8 Q300MP airplanes in February 2009.
